Jim McLaren of Midland was named the new parks manager as well as arena manager. McLaren was taking over the _ position vacated by retiring Mac Callum. Betty Baumgardner and Mike Brammal were the lucky recipients of awards commemorating _ their 500 kilometre swims in Midland YMCA's pool. Midland Secondary School's gym teams put on a good showing in Barrie in April at OF- SSA trials. In the junior division, Tammy Therrien and Heather King finished in the top 10 of 45 com- petitors while Sandra Reynolds' claimed seventh in vaulting. Linda Barry also gave a good showing on bars and beams. In the Intermediate level Cathy Walker finished second on beam for a qualifying spot in OFSSA finals. Ken Proulx and Arnold Burgher of Midland were granted prestigious spots on the York-Simcoe Baseball executive for 1980. Proulx was made executive member while Burgher was made league secretary- treasurer. Sharon Park, Peter Watts, Jackie Gyte and Ian Ross won the KIL Mixed Bonspiel Apr. 12 in Midland Curling Rink. Hebner's Taxi were acclaimed champions of Midland Recreational Hockey Apr. 7 with their 5-2 win over Duggan's Fuels and Midland Oldtimers reached the semi-finals in the Can- Am Oldtimers Hockey Tournament in Lake Placid, N.Y. over the Easter Weekend. May Carrie Fedorwich and Brent Farquhar of Ecole Secondaire Penetanguishene Secondary School proved that they were running with a fast crowd. They qualified for All- Ontario Track and Field Finals in Toronto with their performances as did Ernie Desroches of Midland Secondary School. In Penetanguishene Elementary School competition, Burkevale Public School girls' softball team captured first place for area schools. Midland's~ Toni Lembo came in first in Bolton's Classic Horse Show in Children's Hunter Over Fences May 17 and 18. Rudy Jambrich, a relatively new resident of Midland fell to new heights as the German- born sky diver made his 1700th jump May 6. His _ record-making jump brought him down in the middle of the track at Ecole Secon- daire Penetanguishene Secondary School where the CKMP track meet was taking place. June Horseback riding was big for Midland's Toni Lembo in the month of June as she advanced her winning ways with some impressive showings at Kettleby Community Recognized Horse Show June 7. Her first-place finish in over fences com- petition was backed up with a fifth and a seventh in over fences, a third in equitation over fences, a fourth in equitation on flat C division, a fifth in children's hunter over fences and a seventh in over fences. Her riding mate, Heidi Schafer from _Barrie finished with a second in A equitation flat. a fourth in junior hunter division and two sevenths. St. Theresa's High School in Midland honoured their athletes June 9. John Quilty and Patti Cox were the top male and female athletes of the year for the school. Other awards presented included Randy Buttineau for school _ spirit, Joe McBride for drama, Chris Weissflog for most valuable player in junior boys volleyball, Brian Quesnelle for MVP in midget boys volleyball, Keith Duval for MVP in senior boys volleyball, Ursula Duerkel for MVP in midget girls volleyball, Marv Pat Quilty for MVP in senior girls volleyball and Kelly Swales for MVP in junior girls volleyball. Sacred Heart School's athletes deserved some honour in June as well with their win in the first annual Simcoe County Separate School Multi-Event Track Meet. In that meet, Marlon Gieseler won the senior boys medal while Kelly Lalonde took the senior girls medal for the Midland team. July It was the battle of the Media Baseball Team and the Uncivil Ser- vants July 8 with the Canada Manpower team taking the contest 18-16. A couple of weeks before that match, the two teams tied after a hard-fought game. Mary Kay Orser of Penetanguishene was carrying on in her brother Brian's foot- steps when she signed a two-year agreement with the Ice Follies skating group. Also in the month of July, a case of good sportsmanship was shown by the Victoria Harbour Intermediate Ladies Softball Team when they showed up for a game at 6:45 p.m. The game had been rescheduled for 8:30 weeks prior to that but through a com- Page 12, Friday, January 2, 1981 L& Winning skip munications problem, the Victoria Harbour girls hadn't been told. Instead of taking the two points for a forfeit, the team decided to wait for two hours at the diamond until the other team had arrived. They lost the game 21- A ugust August, like other months was full of winners, Kay Lapere of Midland among them. She won the Emu trophy at Midland's Golf and Country Club. Kelly Leitch of Midland won the CK- MP soap box derby with a time just over 22 seconds. For his win, Leitch received a new bike. Dupuis Groceteria Leafs were big winners in August as_ they captured Penetangu- ishene-Midland's Ball Hockey championship for their third year in a row. They did so by defeating McLarney Marine Vikings 8-2 in finals action Aug. 18 for the third game in a best of five series. Kelly Swales, Vicki Baziliauskas and Mary Pat Quilty, three students at St. Theresa's High School in Midland were win- ners of gold medals in Ontario summer games competition as part of the Southern Ontario ladies' volleyball team. Mike Josland of Midland Secondary School also received a gold medal for his part in the win by Southern Ontario's men's rugby team in Ontario Sum- mer Games action. Russ Howard of Midland skipped the rink of Larry The group then went on to represent Southern Merkley, Bob Ruston and Ken Carstairs as the troupe won the Labatt Tankard Cup for Ontario. Another group of winners was the Penetanguishene-Mi- dland Merchants in the junior division' of Penetanguishene-Mi- dland Ball Hockey League play Aug. 25 as they captured the top spot in the playoffs. Jim Bonner' of Midland was admitted to the 500 kilometre swim club at Midland's YMCA but his swim meant much more. Bonner is 74 years old but that didn't stop him from completing the swim. Maddy Tannahill set a sort of record with her 10th victory since 1968 in Midland Golf and Country Club's ladies' championship. Penetanguishene Oldtimers claimed the gold medal at Elmvale Oldtimers' Baseball Tournament Aug. 9 and 10. Also on the baseball scene. Penetanguishene Juveniles Ladies' Fastball team defeated Penetanguishene G and @ Aug. 25 in Penetanguishene to take the league championship. North Simcoe Far- mers Association also had a good time in August when they went to Shelburne, Ontario for the Summer Games where they finished third overall. Victories for the team included men's baseball, ladies' relay, men's discus. and a second-place win in men's 100 metre run. A new hockey team was accepted into the Intermediate A division of the Ontario Hockey Association. Sept Midland Athletics hockey club was _ un- veiled in the month of September and they immediately got off to their losing ways. But someone was winning at hockey games and that someone was the Penetanguishene Oldtimers who won their third gold medal, their second in hockey in an Oldtimers' tour- nament in Gravenhurst's third Annual Tournament of Colours Sept. 20 and 21. Jim Finlay of Midland was forced to quit his 200 mile walk from Midland to Calabogie Peaks for Terry Fox's Cancer Research Fund. Finlay had to give up his goal at a little more than half way because of extreme blistering to his feet but he did manage to raise $1,258.58 for cancer research. Sept. 22 was a big day for Midland's men's baseball team in Simcoe Rural Fastball League action as they defeated Vasey 9-1 to claim the championship. A.E. LePage novice lacrosse team were declared division champions in Barrie's Minor Lacrosse League but they won a lot more titles that year. They were grand champions in Gloucester Lacrosse League and Huronia Lacrosse League, Huronia Playdown champions, All-Ontario Playdown semi-finalists and Dave Robertson Annual Lacrosse Tournament champi- ons. Ontario in the Briar in Calgary in February. Pat Brodeur' of Midland, who played his minor hockey years in Midland signed with Orillia Jr. B Travelways hockey club. McQuirter Real Estate Midland Minor T-Ball team became champions when they defeated Bell Canada 26-20 Sept. 6. In other' minor baseball action, HOS won the Twin Lakes Sport Centre Trophy in Pony League cham- pionships and Smith's Camp baseball team won 3-2 over French's Dry Cleaners in Little Lake Park for the Civitan House League championship. This was the second year this team has won the trophy in that division. Paul Boucher of Penetanguishene was on the ball Aug. 31 when he won the Billiards Tournament held in Athlete's Edge Sports Store ion Penetanguishene. He defeated Canadian National Exhibition regular, Jim Jones and Boucher also had the high run of 52 points without missing a shot. Brian Orser of Penetanguishene _ ste- pped into the in- ternational limelight in September as he cap- tured first place in Gervais, France and second place in Ober- storf, Germany in senior men's figure skating. competition. Oct Midland Secondary School's horseback riders took top honours a the Elmvale Fair Oct. The boys' golf team at Midland Secondary School finished eighth in GBSSA finals in Stouffville, Ontario while the team from Ecole Secondaire Penetanguishene Secondary School came in 16th in the field of 20. The MSS team was made up of Glen Howard, Brad Copeland, Brian Garner and Gerry Richard. Ken Martin, Tom Rea nk in, Dare Desroches and Dave Atkinson were the members of the team from ESPSS. Ecole St. Joseph in Penetanguishene won the inter-school league football championship for the fourth time in five years by winning all three games of the season. Bruce Guthrie of Wyebridge played for a short time with the newly-formed Midland Athletics but then decided to go to Saginaw, Michigan to play for the Saginaw Gears of the Inter- national Hockey League. Midland Secondary School's football team came a long way in zone two playoffs to reach the semi-finals but they were eliminated at that point by Barrie Central in a close game 25-23.
