PO eR Foe ST Penetang rink takes top spot The Bob Ruston rink of Penetanguishene claimed top spot in the first event during last week's 8th Annual Elmvale _ Invitational Men's Bonspiel staged at the Curling Rink Thursday through Sunday. Ruston defeated" the Bruce Culver rink of Orillia to gain first place, and pick up $600 in prize money for his group. Approximately 20 rinks took part in the four-day event, a feature of which was the $2,500 in total prize money up for grabs. All games, including finals, were. eight end games and spectators jammed the rink to view the top notch curling action. Two draws were held Thursday evening and . three Friday evening. Saturday's schedule included ice action from 7a.m. onwards as well as the Annual Broom Throwing Contest, the results of which will be announced .at next year's bonspiel. A free dinner for all curlers was also held. Sunday saw the day's action begin at 9 a.m. as teams played off for the top spots in each division. In the Fourth Event, Bill Bennett of Bradford played off against the Bruce Castleman rink of Parry Sound with Bennett picking up the win in extra ends. The Third Event was. a match between a hometown club, the Bob Storey rink and the group representing Barrie, the Bob Denney rink. Denney picked up the win in that com- petition. The First and Second Event finals hit the ice around 8:30 p.m. Sunday night after curling action became a little delayed, much of which could have been due to inclement weather conditions. In the Second Event final, the Tim Belcourt rink of Elmvale hit the ice opposite the Keith Williams' rink of Midland to play off for first spot in that division. Over 90 centimeters of snow has fallen on Midland since Nov. 24 and a good portion of that is still on the ground. That converts to 35.10 inches of snow from the beginning of winter weather and that makes for good local skiing. A little further out at Mount St. Louis, ski conditions are good with 30-60 centimetres of combination man-made and natural snow for base with eight centimetres of new natural snow. They have one triple chair, one double chair. two T-bars and one poma lift, all to take you to their 16 slopes. Their cross-country trails are good with 15- 20 centimeters on the trails and 45 cen- timetres in the bush. Eight centimetres of new snow has fallen and the trails are groomed. At Blue Mountain Ski Hills in Collingwood, ski conditions are fair to good with day and night skiing. There are 30 centimetres of man-made base with five centimetres of new natural snow. Three double chairs, one triple chair, one poma lift and one rope tow are at your con- veniences to reach the top of their five slopes. At Medonte, ski conditions are good with 15- 35 centimetres combination man-made and natural base. Six centimetres of new natural snow has fallen and their one chair lift, and oneT-bar will take you to their six slopes. Cross Country trails there are good with 15 centimetres on the trail and 30 in the bush. The trails are groomed and covered with an additional six centimetres of new snow. At Horseshoe Valley, ski conditions are good with 30 centimetres combination man- made and natural snow. They are enjoying five new centimetres of new man-made snow and five centimetres of natural. To accommodate your ascent to their 14 slopes. they have a junior T-bar, a double chair and a triple chair. -Their cross-country trails are groomed and there are 20 centimetres of snow on the trails and 45 centimetres in the bush. The final game of the four day tournament, ending around 10:30 p.m. Sunday evening was for the top spot in the bonspiel.
