\ ea aaa eo ena hie en eee eee eres Team play captures top spot Sacred Heart School's boys' volleyball team are champions and they played like it Saturday in Simcoe County championships at St. Theresa's High School in Midland as they took top spot in Simcoe County boys' volleyball. The Midland squad defeated Connaught from Collingwood in quarter finals by scores of 15-5 and 15-12. They then went on to the semi-finals against Warnica from Barrie where they defeated them 15-13 and 15-5 after losing the first game 15- 10. In the finals, they met Ste. Bernard's from Orillia and volleyball action galore filled the courts at that point. After coming back from a 15-8 defeat, Sacred Heart plowed through St. Bernard's tough defence to win the next two games 15-13 and 15-8. That wasn't bad for a team that finished fifth at the end of round robin play. Congratulations go out to all the players who put out their best efforts _despite the tremendous' odds against them. Juveniles off to good start. The Juveniles' boys' volleyball team from Midland played in Provincial Cup com- petitions over the weekend in- Etobicoke and finished fifth overall in standings. The team is entered in Ontario Volleyball Association play and provided an en- tertaining 'form of volleyball action. In their first match of round robin play, Midland juveniles defeated Thistletown 15- Oldtimers play to 6-6 tie Penetanguishene Hotel Brule Oldtimers played to a 6-6 tie Friday night in Penetanguishene Arena against the Elmvale Georgian Bay Old- timers. Larry Marchand, Alvin Robillard and Ken Davidson all scored double markers for Penetanguishene. Brian Merkley scored a hat trick for Elmvale while Dennis Turner scored two goals and Paul Harvey one goal. The second game in this home and home series will be played in Elmvale Arena Jan. 31. The Oldtimers will be playing this Friday though in an exhibition game in Penetanguishene Arena against a team from the Penetanguishene Mental Health Centre. That game begins at 8:15 p.m. { District 10 champs Thursday was a red letter day for Lynn Morton of Midland and her rink as they defeated a team from Orillia. to take top honours in District 10 playdowns in Midland Curling Club for the second year in a row. Juvenile girls stopped in semi-final Midland Juvenile girls volleyball team finished third in a field of 10 teams in the Provincial Cup championships held Saturday in Etobicoke. Out of 12 games, the girls won eight and lost four, finishing second in their pool of five teams. In the quarter finals, they defeated Green Peppers from Ottawa 15-13 and 15-13 to ad- vance on to the semi- finals against North York Tigers. In semi-final action, Midland was eliminated 15-13 and 15-4 by the Tigers who went on to win the championship. Bears claw Centennials 6-3 Midland Centennials Jr. C hockey club played Parry Sound Shamrocks Sunday night in Parry Sound and despite a valiant effort, the Centennials were handed a 6-3 defeat. Parry Sound was ahead 2-0 at the end of the first period but Midland scored a goal half way through the second period to narrow the margin. Paul Hayes scored the first goal for Midland, Mugford and Hahn getting the assists on the goal. Dale Denis scored Midland's second goal with John Witzke and Andy Zurawski being awarded assists. Parry Sound made sure of their win though as they scored two more goals in the final eight minutes of the third period. Midland's Don Whittaker took the brunt of 43 shots in net while the Centennials fired 34 shots at Parry Sound's Ian Gallagher. In second place in team scoring is Wayne King, playing coach for the squad who has 24 points. King is tied with Ken Knapton and Bill Beauchamp in that spot, Beauchamp having the most assists at 17.
