---- Don Lawrence * Sports editor * Don Lawrence sports editor Pay as you play hurts hockey It has been noted by many referees in Midland Minor Hockey that some parents are paying their children one dollar for every goal they score. This is a particularly disturbing because of what something like this can do the game of hockey. If children are paid to score goals, then chances are that their passing of the puck will lessen in frequency. That also means team-play will deteriorate and everyone on the ice will be trying to break through the other team's defence single- handedly and thus get nowhere. Hockey is a team sport. It was designed to be just that. This pay as you score ploy just destroys all good intentions of the game. It's a team win and a team loss. If parents pay their children for all the goals they score, it almost means the children are competing on a professional level and minor hockey was meant as a place for recreation. One former hockey coach I've spoken to commented, they had this problem when they were involved in Midland minor hockey. Their solution was simple. They paid the players one dollar out of their own pocket for every assist. This stopped the problem in it's tracks and hockey became team sport again for that team. This is, of course, a costly way to go about reinstating the team aspect to minor hockey but it worked. County volleyball champs Sacred Heart School in Midland has a championship team in its midst. Coaches shouldn't be put into this position where they have to work twice as hard to undo the damage done by parents who wish nothing more than to see their child excel, even if it means abandoning the actual concept of the game. Young hockey players are difficult enough to work with as coaches strive to develop good hockey habits in the players without the parents' intervention. Rough hockey Some parents have even been known to pay their children if they played a good, rough hockey game. This may not promote puck-hogging but it Penetanguishene Kings when. they travelled to Bracebridge fora game against the Bears Friday night. The Kings won the game 8-5 but it was close right up to the third period when Penetanguishene pulled away. Penetanguishene scored one minute into play with Carl Cowan getting the credit for the goal. Wayne Dixon scored These three players continue to show their worth as the leading scoring line on the Kings' squad. Paul Goodine faced 38 shots in net for the Kings, also proving that he is a very good goaltender. A's forced to play ee ee does prompt rough play. One thing hockey doesn't need is rough play. The Philadelphia Flyers found this out several years ago. Sure, they won the Stanley Cup playing that way but they've certainly changed their ways since then and they still continue winning. Coaches again suffer from this intrusion into the instruction of good hockey by the parents as they have to watch as the players sit in the penalty box several/times in a game. This hurts the team as well and means that the team must play with less players than the other team. Perhaps, there should be a running account for players like this with them getting paid by the parents for their goals but the players paying one dollar for every time they get a penalty. Parents think minor hockey teams should be run professionally, therefore the players should accept responsibilities as well as benefits of such a set-up. Several minutes later, Gillespie put the Kings ahead once more with a pass from Dixon and Cowan. Gillespie followed that up with another goal from Dixon and Terry Cameron half way through the period to increase their lead to 3- ile Bracebridge wasn't about to let the Kings get away from them though as they shoved two more goals in the net, one coming 40 seconds after Gillespie's second goal and the other one four minutes later. That ended the scoring for the first period with the Bears salvaging a 3-3 tie. Penetanguishene Kings pumped in three goals in the first half of the second period with Keith Press, Dixon and Gillespie getting the markers. Cowan assisted on all three goals in the second period with Cameron and Brad Copeland each figuring on one of the three goals. Bracebridge played catch up hockey for the rest of the second period and managed to score two goals to get within striking distance of the Kings. injured goalie Midland Athletics Intermediate A hockey club seems to be having more than their fair share of problems this season, their first in existance. Their game Friday night in Orillia started off badly and went to worse very quickly as they were downed 12-7 by the Terriers. A new goalie was picked up by the team. Shawn McGuirk who quite frankly played a super game in the first two periods. McGuirk started the game which angered the other two goalies, Dunc Brownell and Randy Jackson. Brownell and Jackson left the rink before the game, leaving McGuirk as the only goalie dressed. This presented a problem for the Athletics in the beginning of the third period as McGuirk took a skate on the side of the head. Because he was the only goalie dressed, he had to play the rest of the game despite his injury. From 6-5 at the end of the second period, the score went up to 12-7. It was obvious McGuirk was hurt and he was taken to the hospital at the end of the game but nothing serious showed up fortunately. Ken Knapton scored two goals and two assists for Midland while Ross Cousineau got two goals as well for the Athletics. Singles were scored by Bob Mon- teith, Wayne King and Terry Spiker for Midland.
