Bill MSS'juniors come trom behind: After only three practices, Midland Secondary School's junior boys' basketball team looked more than ready to start their new season Wednesday in MSS' triple gym. MSS got off to a slow start in the game but came up in the final half of the game to win it 43- 37 over Elmvale. Poor passes and poor shot selection plagued MSS from the start of the game but they soon straightened _ themse- dves out and settled Spiker down to playing some good ball. The third quarter was the best for the Midland squad as they popped in 14 points during that time while Elmvale only managed eight points. Top scorers' for Midland were John Johnson with 18 points, ~~John Hudson with nine points and _ Wilson Cowan with eight points. The junior squad will play again Monday when they will go to Twin Lakes Secondary School in Orillia. league leader Terry Spiker of Midland Athletics' Intermediate A hockey club is tied for league leader in total points as of Dec. 3. Due - to the high level of skill development over the past five to 10 years, this category has been filled with elite type gymnasts. Gymnastics in Huronia has been a recent development and, as a result, we find that our club has only a handful of girls at the junior level (14 years of age and over). Out of this small group, only three gymnasts are in the competitive section of our club. The Juniors Anne McNamara: She has been involved in gymnastics for about five years. Last year she competed at the tyro level in 0.G.F. and finished last season with an excellent showing at the Area 3 Elementary School Gymnastics meet in May. This fine 14-year-old athlete is presently attending Grade 9 at Pene- tanguishene Secondary School. Lisa Vivian: This 14-year-old is a product of the Corpus Christi gymnastic program. Presently, she is in Grade 9 at Penetanguishene Secondary School. Lisa has previous experience at the OGF as well as the local levels. At five-feet 2-inches she is one of our most powerful gymnasts. Her favourite apparatus is the uneven bars. eo «GYM CLUB Gymnastics Corner Sandy McCallum: Last year Sandy was our most successful gymnast. She placed fourth in the Metro West region at the junior category. As a result, she qualified for last year's Provincial Gymnastics meet. To date, this vear has been very disappointing. Sickness and knee injuries have prevented Sandra from attending practices. This 15-year-old is in Grade 10 at St. Theresa's High School. Conclusion Due to the high level of competition at the Junior level we found that our girls needed more time to prepare themselves for these gymnastic meets. As a result, it is unlikely that they will be competing in OGF but in- stead. will be competing in the High School Gymnastic meets which occur in March. These High School meets are almost as competitive as the OGF meets and we feel that our gymnasts will have their work cut out for them to get ready for these. Gymnastics Calendar Saturday, Dec. 13, 1980 -- qualifying meet; Monday, Dec. 15, 1980 -- Gym closed - practice cancelled. Tuesday, Dec. 16, 1980 -- Gym closed - Ist OGF practice cancelled.
