IE SET It was close for A's all the way by Don Lawrence Midland Athletics hockey club has a new look. or at least it seems that way. Their game Sunday night in Midland Cen- tennial Arena against Collingwood _--_Shipbui- Iders showed that there is a side to the team that wants to play down to earth hockey. Thev looked the best they ever have and, for all intensive purposes, have eliminated the majority of their rough- neck style previously displayed. It was also their best game yet, only losing by a score of 7-6. Four minutes into the game. Midland scored their first goal when Terry Spiker put the puck in the net with some help from Wayne King and Ross Prentice. Hindson, Dock Lunch win Hindson Marine is the only team in Penetanguishene Recreational Hockey to win all their games so far this season. They defeated B and J Gas Bar Sunday 5-3 with single goals coming from Bob Dion, Ray Cote, Ken Cowan, Ron Lalonde and Marcel Vallee for Hindson. Dion also assisted on the goal by Ray Cote in addition to his own unassisted goal. Lalonde assisted on Ken Cowan's goal, and then went on to score his own goal with assists going to Rab Larmand and Ray Cote. For B and J Gas Bar, Dan Dahmer scored the first goal, assisted by Aime Gignac and Louis Belcourt. Randy Leroux assisted Richard Lefaive in the next goal and then scored his own goal with help from John Bell and Tim Adams. In the second game, Dock Lunch rolled over Chalet Sports 9-2 with Paul Loughran scoring two goals for Dock Lunch. Bill McIntosh scored one goal and three assists with teammate Ken Edgar doing the same. Larry Cowan scored one goal and two assists as well. For Chalet Sports, Clarence Copegog and Pat Duquette scored while assists went to Fred Akerman and Rick Duval respectively. Hindson Marine is now in first place with six points with Dock Lunch close behind with four. Chalet Sports and B and J Gas Bar each have one point. Cross country champs from MSS Senior boys' cross- country runners from Midland Secondary School are now league champions after Thursday's race in Barrie. Ernie Desroches placed first in senior boys racing again and is now declared the series senior individual champion. Rod Nanibush finished in 14th spot with teammates' Larry Cadieux, and Rick Scott coming in 18th and 20th respectively. They could very well qualify for All-Ontario championships if they do this well at GBSSA championships next week. Holding onto second place was Midland's midget boys. First place went to Orillia District Collegiate and Vocational Institute runners. Bill Richardson had the best finish for Midland midget runners with a fourth place finish. Other runners were Ian Porter in eighth, Bill Black in 11th and Art Triple win for MSS girls All three girls' basketball teams from Midland Secondary School recorded vic- tories at Barrie Central Collegiate Thursday. Midgets Michelle Leadbetter and Katharine Nicholls both ~ scored eight points for Midland while Michelle Koenigsberg and Allison Blackhurst each scored six points. The midgets won against Barrie 32-18. The juniors had an easy time of it when they tangled with Barrie's juniors, defeating them 57-25. Carolyn Meech was top scorer for the team with 20 points, Shelly Recreational volleyball enters new schedule Last Thursday, Simcoe County Women's Recreational Volleyball League opened with preseason exhibition games. Only eight teams are in the league this year as the Barrie Cubby Hole Cuties have disbanded. In Collingwood, the Barrie Blue Bombers defeated the Base Borden Bravettes; 15-1 and 15-1. Collingwood MacKenzie and Gallinger Real Estate Ltd. also won two straight against Base Borden; 15-0 and 15-0. Then Collingwood took two games from Barrie; 15-13 and 15-12. Chris Delugt and Suzie Seto. were outstanding for Collingwood. Heather McLennan and Diane Foster played well for Barrie. In Midland, Orillia C.B. Cragg Insurance won both games against the Midland Com- modore Hotel Malibus; 15-8 and 15-7. In . Bradford, the Cookstown Crusaders defeated the Bradford Blizzards 17-15 and 15- 10. Collingwood came back with three quick goals. one at 16:24 of the first period and the other two at 18:58 and 19:16 of the same period. Midland's Wayne King brought Midland one goal closer with help from Terry Spiker and Ross Prentice at 8:25 of the third period. Spiker tied up the game for Midland at 9:48 of that period with the assist going to Prentice. From there on in, it was close between the two teams a id it looked for a while like Midland might pull off the tie or even the win. But Collingwood had other plans as they scored with three seconds left to play. They are using their lines a lot better now that they have decided to put a few good players on one or two lines instead of putting one exceptionally strong player on each line. Their players that aren't as strong seem to be developing more this way and are gaining in strength because of it. The main thing is that the Athletics fulfilled the fan's hunger for action without that much actual rough play. INMISS wins four in arow Midland Secondary School's football team has advanced their unbeaten streak to four games after defeating Orillia District Collegiate and Vocational Institute 8-7 Thursday. The. first half was scoreless with both teams waging a defensive battle that had the fans on the edge of their seats. In the second half, ODCVI scored a touchdown and kicked a one point conversion. That put their team ahead 7-0 and left a lot of pressure on the shoulders of MSS. - With only three minutes left in the game, Todd Clarke made a move that you had to see to believe. A screen pass from Steve Friesen found its way into Clarke's arms and he then shook off three tacklers to break into the open. Touchdown | Clarke then outran Orillia for a 50 yard touch- down. A two point conversion by Kevin Cowden frgm Friesen put MSS into the lead 8-7. Team play was at its best for MSS in their toughest game of the year. Mark Pumputis and Matt Gleben receive honourable mentions for their defensive plays injthe game. Carl Cowan ran for 105 yards while Todd Clarke got credit for 113 running yards. Kevin Cowden caught four receptions in the game. The victory gives MSS first place in North Division Standings, one win ahead of ODCVI and Park Street with three wins apiece.
