PLEASE CALL Story or picture idea: 526-2283 8 am. to 5 p.m. Welcome Wintario happy to see you TOWN OF Midland will be put on the map tomorrow when Wintario brings its road show to town complete with Fred Davis and Faye Dance. The Wintario draw is to be held at the Yonge Street Civic Centre with Mayor Moreland Lynn as master of ceremonies for the pre-draw program. In the more than five years since Wintario has been in operation, well over $1 billion worth of government lottery tickets have been sold with the town that is included in the program. That plug is money in the bank. Those viewers all over Ontario who will be watching Wintario being televised live from here will get to learn something about us and the town we live and work in. The whole idea of having Wintario here is to promote the community and we are certain tomorrow night's TV broadcast will do just that. Our readers say... Lioness say 'special thanks' Dear Editor: We, the Lioness Club of Midland wish to express our sincere thanks to the public for their kindness and support with our several fund raising projects that we've held to raise funds for the Wheelchair Ramp for the Library. Our first project was a Garage Sale and it took in $350.01. Sold our first lot of Super Hero Pens and cleared $179.00. Sold numerous Crafts and home made baking with a lemonade stand at the Sidewalk Sale and realized a profit of $573.82. Held a second Garage Sale and made $331.24. We did receive 2 cash donations one from the Georgian for $25 and one from the Ability Association of the March of Dimes for $50. And now the Ramp that remains to be seen is in the hands of our builder, Mr. McClung, the Town's approval of the new plans and the Library Board's O.K. We sincerely hope that a grant will be given to us towards the project so that we can keep our other existing activities some assistance. We also hope that this will come about this year during the Centennial Celebrations of the Library. It is also the year of the Physically Handicapped Incidently Lioness Club have organized in the countries of Portugal, St. Vincent West Indies, Finland and Fiji Islands to bring a total of 65 Nations hosting them with 2,635 Clubs and a membership of 65,800 making the Lioness the number one Club in service to help others. / "'Here's to the Lioness - dedicated to Faith, Hope proceeds going to thousands of So welcome _ Wintario. Additional NCO Is good decision WE'RE PLEASED an additional NCO has been the rank of sergeant. The 47-year-old officer has Opposes alderman's statements Dear Sir: The remarks of Ward 1 Alderman Bev Day, as reported in your paper of Oct. 3, 1980, concerning the promotion of Marcel Dorion to the rank of Sergeant, with the Midland Police Department, should not go unchallenged. As a retired police officer of many years standing, I can personally attest as to the capabilities of Sergeant Dorion in a backyard at night or in any other potentially stressful situation. Sergeant Dorion is in every sense of the word a professional officer: he is physically able to handle any situation in which this capability may be his appearance as becomes a good police officer and he is above all a gentleman in every respect. As reported, Mr. Day stated that he was speaking personally as to how he felt. In so doing he has demonstrated through his ill-advised remarks that he is completely without any knowledge of Sergeant Dorion or his ability as an all around geod law enforcement officer. How unfortunate it is that men of such poor judgement as represented by Alderman Day can publicly malign a man who is not in a position to answer due to the restraints placed upon him by his position. promoted by Midland council 24 years of police work to his __ required: he is mentally alert to possible explosive Yours truly, to the town's police force. credit, 11 in Midland and the conditions which may arise; he is courteous to the John R. This has now been finally achieved with the appointment of long-time police Const. Marcel Dorion to required number of NCOs. This should help reduce the pressure on our police chief and allow him to be even more visible in those areas where his expertise can be put to the best and fullest use. Council's decision to go with a fourth sergeant as recommended by the OPC was the proper step to take... The force itself will benefit from such a move in the long run. The Midland Times Second Class Mail Registration Number 3194 The Penetanguishene 18th Floor, 77 Bloor Street West, Toronto, Ontario Dear Mr. Minister: I ask you as the responsible Minister to im- mediately reconsider your position with regards to the tax grants for senior citizens to remedy the injustice done to the poorest of pensioners and particularly those in nursing homes. As you are aware, there are a substantial number Homecoming '80 set for York U. Dear Sir: = To help celebrate York University's 20th an- niversary, the Department of Alumni Affairs has invited more than 38,000 graduates to attend Homecoming '80, Oct. 17 and 18 on the Keele Street and Glendon College campuses. Always a time for nostalgia, the alumni will join with the entire York community to participate in respond to the higher costs they all face. Few of us disagreed with the measure, even though ptently political, which would give Ontario the credit. What we did not expect was that those at the bottom end would get less, while all others, including those with more adequate incomes, would benefit. Mr. Minister, I found particularly offensive the remarks of the Treasurer Frank Miller, who tried to justify the inequities by saying the poorest pen- sioners are covered by an extra $10 per month the province is paying toward the Guaranteed Annual Income Supplement program. Surely this was to deal with inflation. To give on the one hand and then take away with the other borders on hypocrasy. The suggested amendment made during the debate on the new legislation by my colleague Marion Bryden, MPP Beaches Woodbine, would have guaranteed no one would receive less under the new allowances and it would have been a reasonable approach to the problem.
