Farm delegate A Junior Farmer exchange delegate from Australia, Ms. Helen Hurley, arrived in the area Friday night to begin a week-long stay in the North Simcoe region as part of a 17 week tour of farms and Junior Farmer programs in Canada. Ms. Hurley, a native of Melbourne Australia, has been hosted by a Junior Farmer family in each county of Ontario after being selected to represent Victoria by the State Bank of Australia. Her visit is essentially designed to allow her the opportunity to observe and exchange ideas with young people and clubs in Canada. To date her visits have involved her in tours, speeches to various clubs, games days, meetings as well as a little work on the farms she has been hosted at. In making com- parisons between her home club, and those in our country, Helen feels the two are similar, but the Canadian group s have a more defined Community Betterment program and are more into team games at a provincial level than they are in Australia. "The hierarchy though is basically the same", she stated. As for the country itself, Helen said she experienced no culture shock whatsoever but was amazed at the large number of barns and outbuildings used here. In her country, there is no snowfall, therefore the need for these types of storage facilities is not so great. The delegate, a primary school teacher back home, she resides on her father's 350 acres farm, where along with her brother, she helps breed cattle and show harness horses. Operations in Australia are larger, she said, because of the abundance of land and the small population density. A normal sized farm would be around 700-800 acres as com- pared to the 100 acre plots averaged here. Crops are basically the same, oats, barley and wheat as well as the sheep found on her parents' property. Much of the land over there is grassland, and Helen admitted to being 'very impressed' with the efficient use of land farmers make in Canada. As for the lighter side of her visit, Helen ex- perienced her first corn roast with her friends the Rumneys last weekend and has been escorted by Ann, also a Junior Farmer, to various parties and gatherings. 'As it happens, I have no set adgenda for this visit,' she said, but is sure to be kept quite busy for the week she spends in the area before moving on to York County next week. Living with Vern and Betty Rumney and their daughter Ann (as well as the eight dogs and many cats), the single girl will in no way lack for company as plans for pool parties, meetings and_ get- togethers are being made constantly.
