American boy killedwhile crossing Highway 27 by Judy French A seven-year-old boy from Alliance, Nebraska was killed on Saturday afternoon when he at- tempted to cross Highway 27 north of Barrie. Jason Fero was rushed to Royal Victoria Hospital in Barrie and was pronounced dead on arrival. He had been attending the two-day endurance test organized by the Barrie Motorcycling Association with his father John Fero. The event started at 12 noon on Saturday at Vantastic Conversions Limited at Midhurst on Highway 27. The boys darted out onto the highway into the path of a southbound car driven by Paul Craddock of Phelpston. An eye witness at the Be John Fero was one of the 200 bikers gathered at the Vantastic Conversions building on Highway 27, at Midhurst on Saturday afternoon. Mr. Fero's son Jason was hit by a passing vehicle as the seven-year-old boy attempted to cross the busy road shortly after scene estimated there were between 75 to 100 cars parked on both sides of the highway at the time of the accident. These vehicles belonged to both the 200 participants in the event and to spectators who stopped to watch the bikes leave the Vantastic property. This same eye witness spoke to a nurse attending to the victim at the hospital and she reported the father of the boy was upset at the dangerous conditions under which the biking event had started. She claims Mr. Fero had spoken to his wife on Friday night and had complained about how dangerous and treacherous the con- ditions of the endurance test were. Mr. Randy Jackson, | Wy 4 Ee chairman of the Barrie Motoreycling Club had helped arrange the course and says he felt the conditions of the route were safe. The bikers left from the Vantastic property and travelled approximately one-eighth of a mile south on High- way 27 to begin the cross country endurance test on a bush trail in Midhurst. The' 200 riders then travelled on this trail to County Road 28 through Snow Valley to Anten Mills, over to Orr Lake and up to Horseshoe Valley working their way back to Midhurst. Most of this route was through wooded property, but the bikers did have to cross some roads in the area according to Mr. Jackson. The fatal accident did not stop the event. "Eb Mr. Jackson also says the organizers of the test spoke with the OPP prior to the event. '"The police were well aware of the road crossings and knew exactly where we were riding," said Jackson. "Everything was well looked after," he added. According to Jackson, the riders had to obey a flagging system which cautioned them before crossing a road. A stop sign was also signaled at certain areas, and any rider not obeying these signals was penalized and could even be disqualified. "This was not a spectator event" stressed Jackson, '"'it was a qualifying endurance test sponsored' by Bombadier for the International Six Day Trials (ISDT) which will P< tee ce maer) <4 : ae be held in Sweden this year,' he said.
