"It bothers me,"' said the Midland lawyer, "that a corporation this big is governed by a board that consists of only about 50 people." Administrator E Pritchard reminded those present that an active advertising campaign had netted only two new members. A $10 mem bership fee permits anyone to become a board member. Within the next year the board intends to explore ways of en couraging members of the public to become members of the board and to take an active part in the running of their hospital. No new board members were elected at Monday's meeting, although three members whose terms were up were re-elected Elaine Nicholls, M Campell and William Vidler were uncontested although Douglas Appleton was nominated from the floor. Mr Appleton declined the nomination. Reports from various committees revealed that HDH's first (15 month) year was a good one Although statistically in a deficit position, with the deduction of expenditures which do not require cash outlay (depreciation) the balance sheet showed that the hospital operated with a $16,470 surplus When asked what cost cutting operations he'd implemented over the year, Administrator Pritchard cited the cutting of contract ser- vices in areas where patient care was not affected; re-arrangement of dietary staff schedules and minimal layoffs in other departments "Other hospitals close beds to cut costs. This is something we cannot do and it would only be considered as a last resort," commented Mr Pritchard Dr. Hollister King Chief of Medical Staff, reported a year with no neo-natal or maternal deaths. Of the 309 babies born last year, 148 were male and 161 female In the special care unit, 12 patients were resuscitated and eight patients suffering from overdoses were monitored, and all sur vived The most common medical disorder was heart disease followed by respiratory disease Dr. King pointed out that the most common surgical procedures performed in the past year were related to trauma resulting from accidents--particularly in the tourist season from May to October--the potential patient population doubles during this period. "The big difference between Huronia District and the old _ Saint Andrew's Hospital is that we have the ability to do 'day care' surgery, which allows patients to come in for minor surgery and return home the same day. This eases the burden on surgical beds,"' he said. An average of 1,000 patients pass through outpatient and emergency in a typical month. Dr. King pointed to physio cardiac rehabilitation and the capability of performing thyroid tests on newborn infants as indicative of the improvements in health care at HDH. Board Chairman William Vidler remarked in his report "All in all, I feel that we have had a very busy fifteen month period in spite of growing pains."
