Payette Foundry Awenda date unknown The official grand opening of Awenda Provincial Park which was scheduled for Saturday, has been in- definitely postponed due to "'unavoidable" cir- cumstances. The park will be open to local people, however, once the major work is completed and the water system has been tested. Awenda Superintendent Tom Stott told The Times Monday he cannot give an exact date when the park will open to the locals or Centre officially to everyone. He explained that the company who won the tender to install the hydro distribution system went out on strike. This has delayed the opening by at least three weeks. The company has just returned to work. "Once we get going the park will be open to the local people. Later on when the park is sure to Days of the Payette empire Try to imagine what July 1, 1923 would have been like. The small town of Penetanguishene Ontario is alive and bustling. Most everyone seems to be headed up Robert Street East past the top of the hill. In the distance there is the faint sound of people cheering and whistling. "What is going on?" would ask a resident of the town today. There was nothing unusual happening for a July 1 in the 1920's. It was just that the well-liked Mayor of Penetanguishene, J. T. Payette, was staging his annual racing meet on the best half mile horse track in Canada, now the open field in front of the high school. If you could have been at the track that day you might have seen, if you looked around the crowd, the ardent horseman himself displaying his famous horse The Lucy L, had a track time of 2.0012 and won. over. six thousand dollars the previous year on the Grand Circuit. Apparently, J.T. was not a very good speaker but well liked and much respected around town. J.T.'s house was quite the mansion back in those days. It was a huge house even by today's stan- dards. It stands today much the way it cid back then, on the corner of Robert Street West and Owen Street on the right hand side (behind the Huronia Motors car lot(. Huronia Motors car lot). 1921 and it was during his term of office that the Soldiers Memorial and Huronia Park were built. Also known as a smart businessman he pur- chased fourteen hundred acres of land on the Tiny shore looking toward Penetanguishene. J.T. had a lot of wealth and power but he worked to get it. In 1880 his uncle, Pete Payette established the well known machine shop and foundry and produced excellent saw mill machinery that became popular with lumbermen all over Canada In 1911 the Payette lathe mill and bolter was tested to capacity when a world's record of 128,350 lathes in ten hours was set. In 1912, Peter Payette passed away and after a few months during which the plant was operated on behalf of the heirs, it was bought by Mr. George Copeland in conjunction with J.T. In April 1914 Mr. Copeland withdrew his interests and J.T. assumed full control and got the enterprise off to it's record breaking pace. From the time he started, he followed and executed his slogan, "Business, and more business." Many machine shops were being transformed into shell factories at that time and it became dif- ficult to find ready and capable places for repair work, especially marine repairs. J.T. wisely weighed the situation and measured accurately the op- portunities. Soon he was inundated with work and the plant was enlarged and additional workers hired. With the coming of the first war came heavy uncertainty and _ the youthful J.T. started using venturesome initiative. It was perhaps J.T.'s most prominent characteristic, the continuous will to take a chance. The war effort marked another triumph as a 2,600 pound brass liner for the propeller shaft of the Canadian ship "Logger" was made, shrunk and feleuet ed agit Penetanguishene. That was generally the Payette empire, a name that meant wealth and power. J.T.'s only son died and in later years a good part of his fortune was eaten away by fires on his land.
