The need for larger quarters spurred the purchase of a lot at the corner of King and Dominion, but before sufficient funds had been raised, an alternative arrangement was struck with FW Jeffery who built a three storey building on the site, and leased the second storey to the Y for $500 annually. At that time, the '"'new" Y facilities were considered among the best equipped in all Ontario. The rooms were open until 10 p.m., and the Y also conducted a "'star course of en- tertainments", excursions, social evenings and an annual banquet. There are Midlanders who still remember the fun of the "Bum Bum and Ding Ling Y Circus." Then, in 1928, Mr. and Mrs. S.L. White gave the town a magnificent gift - a new building, com- pletely equipped and furnished. In recognition of this fact and in com- memoration of the White's 50th wedding an- niversary, an illuminated book was placed in the lobby of, the Y which detailed their ac- complishments and service to the town of Midland. White was an American who came to town in 1887. By 1900 he and his wife had become Canadian citizens, and they began their active interest in the affairs of their adopted town. White was a business partner of James Playfair, and served Midland on council and as mayor in 1904-5 and again in 1918. He was an energetic member of the building fund of the Presbyterian Church, and for 16 years he was Chairman of the Hospital Board. It was White who secured the Carnegie grant which built the Midland Public Library (in the building which now houses the senior citizens' centre). As well as being a member of the Parks commission during the establishment of the tourist camp, White was also president of the Midland Hockey Team which won the Northern Ontario cham- pionship and he was one of sponsors of Midland's first curling rink. The White's gift of a fully furnished and equipped YMCA building has proven to be an enduring landmark in the history of our town. Now the activities of the Y have outgrown their present quarters, and we are embarking on a new chapter in the Y's history of service to the youth of Midland. ret The c/MuSic Company~ HURONIA MALL Heart Magazine Album featuring HEARTLESS Album Special *4.99 526-9614 Radie Shaek HURONIA MALL 526-6064 See our SUPER SPECIALS in our SIDEWALK SALE AD on P11 of todays paper. a From hopsack textures to embroidered challis, we have the most up-to-date col- lection of coordinates in the area.
