PO SS SC CUCU err Lawn bowling club on water 'just beautiful' "We have 400 feet of waterfront and _ the property is just beautiful,' commented Midland Lawn Bowling Club President Ken Ellis Wednesday afternoon, as members and friends celebrated the opening of this year's season at a tea on the grounds. It is beautiful. A sign on Highway 12 at the out- skirts of Midland directs visitors down a winding road leading to the renovated cottage that serves as a club house, and to the well tended greens. The club originated with the lease of the property from the Town of Midland. The first green was built in 1975, but problems with the grass in 1976 delayed the Start for a year. The first financial push for the club came from the Civitans, who have a trophy named after them in appreciation of their assistance. Grants from Wintario and New Horizons enabled the club to buy storage sheds and equipment for _ the maintenance of the greens, as well as fur- niture for the club house. On Monday, June 19 teams from as far away as Richmond Hill will be arriving to compete in the first Open District Tournament. The Civitan trophy will be at stake on that weekend as well as a Centennial trophy, donated by Sterling Trust. The first thing one learns in an afternoon at the lawn bowling club is not to call the balls "balls". They are known as bowls, and the object of the game is to roll a bowl toward the Skip (your captain) in the diretion of the jack - a small white ball. The bowl that's closest to the jack scores a point. In many ways, lawn bowling resembles curling. The bowls are weighted and roll much like a wheel. Most members have a personal set of bowls which can cost as much as $90. There are bowls 'available at the club for newcomers who'd like to try the sport. How do you get a good shot away? You get into a regular bowling crouch, and hold the bowl in the cup of the hand. It's important not to let the ball bounce off your hand. This spoils the shot and the velvety damages green. Lawn Bowling teams can be single, double, triple, or made up of four people. The game goes up to 21 points, and it's not as easy as it looks. One has" to judge the distance to the jack, how hard. to throw, and to anticipate the curve of the ball toward the jack Anybody can join "We are hoping," said President Ellis "to have young people join our club. We'd like to see Rolling them get involved with the sport. There is no age limit." There are 70 members in the club at the moment. The target is 100 mem- bers by year's end. Newcomers can try the sport before they join, and may bowl twice in any one week free. Membership involves a $10 initiation fee a $30 bowling fee. An associate membership fee costs $15. The eager beginner can bowl almost Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday afternoons are free bowlings playoff days. Club Schedule Mondays are reserved for open bowling and tournaments. Tuesday nights are men's nights, and Thursday nights are reserved for women. Friday is mixed night, and on Saturdays "'jit- anytime., ney" tournaments are arranged, when teams are drawn out of a box. Open bowling takes place on Sunday afternoons. M.I.M.S. Day Bowling is the principle reason for the clib, but other good things happen there too. In the name of fun, Wednesday was designated MIMS (Made It My Self) day, and in fact each Wednesday the club is: open for card playing and handcrafts. Products of the MIMS activities were on sale at Wednesday's opening tea, which was convened by Florence' Broad. Proceeds from the sale of crafts went to pay for new equipment and green maintenance. The location is perfect, the game is fun, and it looks like a good season ahead for the Midland Lawn Bowling Club. yy LOOK FOR THESE 19 Ontario Sweeps i (FEetiUures * MARY MILES WIENERS 1LB. C PKG. That year, MSS took five out of ten awards in the Georgian Bay Drama Festival, directed by Chris Thomson. The stage crew which included Jim McKean, Benjy Karch, John Weeks, and John Gignac, were singled out for speical recognition. It was alsoa good year for football, for music and for MSS skiers. Bonnie Bray, Peggy Krochko, Pam Ellison, Don Foster, Greg Somers and Dieter Bauer were the stars. And the jokes in the 1962-63 Memoirs were just as corny as they are in any high school year book. (I guess I've lost another pupil," said the Science teacher as his glass eye rolled down the sink.) You may find some very familiar faces in the pic- tures below. Where were you in '62 at | This week's Centennial Scrapbook takes a look at the relatively recent past. In 1962, MSS was called Midland-Penetanguishene District High School. Students from Penetanguishene shared the building until their own high school was completed in 1965. Memoirs from 1962-63 indicate an active student life at the school which had only been open since 1955. There was a 4H Forestry Club (President Marion Playfair) ; a tennis club, a math club and a stamp club. If that didn't appeal, students could choose from a Spanish Club (with Senora Cardenas) a Geography Club, a Camera Club or a French Club. And for those who couldn't decide, there was the Omnibus Club. Students kept in touch with each other through Hi- sterics a weekly newspaper column (John Allen and Beth Boyd editors) and with Hi-Review, a weekly radio show staffed by Benjy Karch, Beth Boyd and Paul Che -/MuSic Company HURONIA MALL Heart Magazine Album featuring HEARTLESS Album Special *4.99 526-9614 Radie Shaek HURONIA MALL "Triple Play®"' -- Our Most Popular AM/FM Cassette Recorder AUTHORIZED SALES CENTRE 526-6064 Reg. 99.95 SALE 64° © Automatic Shut-Off and Level Contro! for Great Recording Convenience © Sensitive Built-In Condenser Mike © Pushbuttons for All Tape Functions © Battery Condition/Tuning Meter Record Off-the-Air As You Listen i ° fa: From hopsack textures to embroidered challis, we have the most up-to-date col- lection of coordinates in the area.
