The empty capsule will be shot off to Mars, and the three astronauts are to simulate the entire Mars landing on a huge sound stage at a secret base in the desert. Unfortunately when the rocket re-enters the earth's atmosphere a heat-shield failure causes the rocket to disintegrate. Naturally since the three astronauts are assumed by the world to have been aboard the rocket, it is thought that they are dead. Of course the astronauts are very much alive on earth, and their existence is'a threat to NASA's hoax. The space agency must exterminate them. The three astronauts escape into the desert, and a grim struggle for survival begins.
