'Camera central' in Pulitzer Prize collection "the Camera seems to me...the central in- strument of our time."' So said James Agee, and proof lies in Moments a handsome collection of Pulitzer Prize winning pieeerauus from 1941 to 1977. Many of the pictures will seem familiar. The @: State killing is in- uded, and so is the Oswald assassination, and the famous photo of the Marines raising the flag at Iwo Jima. There's only' one amateur photo in the collection. Taken with a Kodak Brownie, it shows the cab of a transport dangling over a bridge while the driver is being hauled to safety. Virginia Schau, who took the picture, was the first woman to win the Pulitzer in photography. - The photographs are excellently reproduced from high quality prints. Many of them focus on violence, which is a commentary on the times they record. Opposite each photograph is an account of the circumstances behind the Unfortunately, the prose is not up to the standard FM noisy picture by Terry Dupuis "FM" is another one of those plotless and noisy films like Record City which do well at the box- office by catering to the teen trade. "FM" takes place at fictitious Los Angeles radio station called QSKY (Their motto is "Welcome to Q- SKY, where we never come down to earth".) At the beginning of the movie we learn that QSKY has risen to Number One in the ratings. The station is run by a dedicated young manager named Jeff (played. by Michael Brandon). His staff of dise jockeys are a loyal and equally dedicated bunch, if somewhat ec- centric. The stations three most important DJs are played by Cleavon Little, Eileen Brennan and Martin Mull. However, the No. I rating brings problem for Jeff and his staff. The broadcasting chain which Movie review owns the station sees new profit possibilities and begins to interfere with the operation of QSKY. They send over a sales manager from Chicago named Regis Lamar. Conflict breaks out between Jeff and Regis when the sales manager orders Jeff to runa series of big-money army recruitment commercials which Jeff finds loathsome. Jeff refuses and quits. His staff goes on strike in protest. And even the loyal listeners of the station rally to Jeff's defense. "FM" never really examines the cultural force of FM rock radio. It's feeble plot never develops into anything significant and seems to be mainly an excuse to Call Contact 526-9333 Hours 9 a.m. to5 p.m. Monday toFriday (Except Holidays) Sports-a-rama is over and once again it was a great success. The new Midland Centennial Arena lent itself sowvery effectively for our event and the exhibitors and the public came away with a very happy satisfied feeling. Contact would like to publicly th ank the many people who supported this gigantic undertaking and helped make the show such a success. The excitement and enthusiasm of the exhibitors gave the spirit to the show. The very smart fashion show put on by Shoppe 27 and Captains Quarters gave everyone a feeling of elegance:--Baton class under the direction of Mrs. Judy Bales was super and the golf demonstration Sailor Caygill of Brooklea exhibited what we all should know about golf. As always setting the pace...the. ... Midland Pipes and Drums were spine tingling and got the show off toa terrific start. Our sincere thanks to all these community minded people who gave of their time and energy to make Sports-a-rama an annual event to look forward to. The Publicity that The Free Press, The Midland Times and CKMP gave the show all helped to bring Sports-a-rama together, Contact thanks them. During the confusing days prior to Sports-a-rama the office and phones of Contact carried on with the numerous and various types of calls. One call came from a lady who has recently moved to Midland. This lady was very active in the Scottish Dancing groups of Aurora and is most interested in finding other people interested in the same beautiful art of Scottish dan- cing. She has already acquired a place to practice and all she needs now are more interested people. If you ever had the desire tod be a part of sucha group, now is your chance, so please call Contact at 526-9333 and we can give you more information. Smoke detectors are required now in all new homes under the Ontario Building Code and an increasing number of consumers are installing them in existing homes. "In the wake of this week's tragic fires in Toronto, consumers are asking questions about smoke detectors. We want them to have accurate, reliable information, and we want them to have it now", said Larry Grossman, Minister of Consumer and Com- mercial Relations. Contacts Consumer Information has an information sheet available to consumers. The bulletin outlines the types of detectors available, and tells where to install them in the home. It also gives tips on reducing fire hazards and establishing escape routes. I feel strongly that this type of needless tragedy could be averted and I urge consumers to call Contact at 526-9333 for more information. Happiness is helping others to help themselves. Mary M. The only standout in the cast is Martin Mull, the nightclub comic who recently shot to fame as the host of T.V.'s spoof talk show Fernwood Tonight. In "FM" he plays an_ egotistical temperamental disc jockey named Eric Swan. "FM" picks up con- siderably in any scenes Mull appears in, and he easily walks away with the whole picture. To me Martin Mull provided the only bright spot in an otherwise dreary movie. However, fans of rock music will probably enjoy "FM"' much more than I did. PEN THEATRE Wed., Thur., Fri., Sat. Written by either Sheryle or John Leekley, it is irritatingly pretentious and peppered with bad con- struction,...and serialised dots. Like many books of photographs, Moments elects to publish technical information in appended pages at the back of the book, which means a lot of irritating flipping back and forth for anyone seeking details on equipment and film used. The photographs are by their every inclusion, ex- cellent. They speak for themselves, and represent a_ significant contribution to our social history. Another husband and wife team, Paul and Karyn Pfarr have produced a book on log cabin building which will appeal to determined do it your-selfers. Build your Own Log Cabin is based on the Pfarr's personal experience. Starting with no cash at all and a minimum of know how, they built themselves two homes, of logs. There's a triple em- phasis in this neatly illustrated book - detailed instruction, economy and ease of construction. The Pfarrs discovered when they were researching log building techniques that many methods are considered to be common knowledge and are mentioned but not ex- plained. Building Your Own Log Cabin explains everything, even down to how to sharpen your axe. The Pfarrs insist that you can build your own dwelling without spen- ding very much money, and they give recipes for pine pitch (for water- proofing) and for a "magic cement" (wood ashes, clay, salt and water) that they claim can be used to make bricks or chink a cabin. Salvaged materials also find their place in the Pfarr's building in- ventory. Rubber tires make excellent hinges and windows can be contrived from automobile plate glass found in a wrecker's yard. You don't even have to buy door handles if you build the Pfarr way. "A part of a tree branch where it joins the trunk is good, or an iron ring." Pfarr says that many of his methods will be smiled at by those who cannot imagine being forced to use them. "People who have plenty of money can always find ways to do things, but for the really poor, there are com- paritively few ways, and they need to be made clear." "A single day's printing of just one average newspaper which _ is thrown away the next day has killed enough trees to build a hundred log cabins and fuel them for an indefinite amount of time."'
