The Dr. Charles Talbot home on First Street in Port MeNicoll is certainly no exception to the axiom. Situated on a sloping hill just approaching the centre of the village, the large white home stands as a proud gateway to historic Port MeNicoll. The 75-year-old home was purchased by the Talbots 20 years ago. Since then, they have transformed it from a conventional dwelling into a veritable showplace with about 4,000 square feet of living space. ' They have added to the original home four rooms, which have been made into an 18 by 15 foot kit- chen, a 40 hy 15 foot har- den, a dining room and a study. The interior of the home has been entirely renovated, and now boasts a 26 by 24 foot living room, five bedrooms and _ four bathrooms. Most of the designing during the renovation project was done by Dr. Talbot himself. The ac- tual renovations were done by Gerry Reedy, a one-time prominent local builder. The first thing you see when. stepping inside the Talbot home is a large slate floored entrance way. On closer in- spection, you note that the walls of the entrance way have been built from thousands of tiny marble bricks, placed with painstaking precision on top of each other. To the right of the entrance way is the kitchen, dominated by a large round fable designed by one of the younger Talbots. The table features a unique rotating food service at its centre. To the left of the en- trance way is the home's focal point, the living room. Recently painted and covered in deep pile broadloom, the living room manages to be fashionable without sacrificing a sense of warm hospitality. Leading upstairs to the bedroom area is another of the Talbot home's unique features--a spiral staircase. To construct the staircase the con- tractor first built a winding iron mould, and then installed oak stairs around it. Off the living room and at the home's northern extremity is the bar-den. This room is designed for relaxation, and it is furnished appropriately with a large sit-up bar, couches, soft chairs, television and stereo. One of the more unusual rooms in the Talbot home is not located directly in the house. Adjacent toa swimming pool, located in the back yard is a small cottage which serves as a change house and the Port MeNicoll equivalent of Grand Central Station. In that cottage is housed a truly remarkable collection of model trains, little towns, roundhouses, freight yards, forests. tunnels and just about everything the complete model railroader would want. This room and others in the Talbot home are representative of a * ~dwellingewhich although+ fashionable and tasteful, is used as a place to live and have fun. INSULATION Canadian Ener-sav Co. Ltd. The mixed stucco and board of the Tudoresque exterior, combined with the brick veneer and small-paned windows, recall the traditional cottages of Shakespearean England. The weather-sheltered entrance leads into a compact reception foyer, from which one moves up three risers and into the main living area of the home. . The enclosed L-shaped kitchen provides for a breakfast nook and separates from the dining room and hall via pocket doors. The L-shaped living-dining room combination provides the cozy warmth of a wood-burning fireplace and the added advantage of positioning away from the bedroom complex for disturbance-free entertaining. A double full garage offers the convenience and security of a completely protected separate entrance to the main foyer, and has adequate space for the future development of a workshop for the home handyman. The full basement affords the growing family ample room for storage and the future development of additional bedrooms, and/ or recreation or family rooms.
