The outcome of the two- game total point series was a foregone conclusion however, as Elmvale came up cold against Crusaders on their home Kings, Penetanguishene Junior Kings got yet another of their wishes Wednesday night, as Bracebridge Bears obliged them by defeating Huntsville Huskies 15-5 at the Bracebridge Memorial Arena. Kings coach Paul Henry said during practice early in the week, that he had no preference for either Bears or Huskies but, his team seemed to prefer S'en vient le 9 mars FRANCAISES 63, rue Main Penetanguishene (549-8594) Crusaders continued their overwhelming attack from the day before and outscored Elmvale 13-2 to take a commanding 36- point lead. St. Theresa's coach Rick Presse took some of the pressure off his opponent by shifting his lineup in the second quarter and Elmvale responded with seven points to Crusaders six. Elmvale battled no avail. Elmvale coach Richard Austin explained his strategy coming into the game as merely to save face by winning the single game. "We realized there wasn't too much we could do being down 25 points already, so I 'told the boys, let's win this game. We've beaten every team in the league before, so Mid-court steal Albert Larose of Elmvale District High School makes a mid-court steal from St. Theresa's Paul Cox during Area Three Midget basketball final Wednesday, at St. Theresa's High school in Midland. St. Theresa's won the game to advance centre for St. Theresa's, who is already stuffing the basket, a rarity in Midget play. "His height and rebounding ability hurt us," Austin admitted after the game. If we boxed him in, it would hurt our zone and their number 15 (Paul Cox) would start to score from the outside." Presse agreed with ORE 0%; to the Georgian Bay championship tournament Saturday, in Barrie. Staff photo games, extremely well," he said. Duval was high scorer for Crusaders with a total of 33 points in the two games, totalling 19, on Wednesday and 14 on Tuesday, in Elmvale. Robert Varley equalled Duval's effort in the first game, also hitting for 14 points. Elmvale's high scorer in both games was John Minty, who came up with two 14-point games for a total of 28 in the series. In Tuesday's game, St. Theresa's took a one- point lead in the first quarter, extended it to three in the second, but exploded for 20 points in the third to break Elm- vale's offence going into the final frame. St. Theresa's built their lead to 25 points by the end of the game to win 46- 21. Rick Presse credited his defence with a fine effort in holding Elmvale shooters off the scoreboard and preventing them from Staying within range. "That was the big difference, our boys played well on defence and limited their defence too."' St. Theresa's will take on the winner of the other zone semi-final Saturday, in the Georgian Bay Midget A championships being held at Barrie Eastview Collegiate. Although the series had not been decided by press time, Presse said that Stayner would be the most likely choice as an opponent. "They're traditionally contenders, they're always in it." "They've got a well- balanced club that passes well and puts on good pressure, They're also a well-disciplined club so it should be a big game down there."' ; Presse said Crusaders Bears will meet in finals Bracebridge. "T said before, I don't care who we meet, but the boys seemed to have wanted to play Bracebridge. Huntsville plays a really physical game--pure-sixers-- we've had some trouble with them before, brawls and things, so the boys would rather play Bracebridge."' "Whoops of delight came from Kings dressing room Wed- nesday night, as word of the Bears win reached them, setting the stage for Friday night's first game of the final series in Penetanguishene. Bears exploded for seven goals in the second period to take a 10-4 lead in the game and added five more in the third to cap the win in fine style. Monty Smith and Rob Davison led the charge for Bears scoring four times each and Rob Armstrong added three more. Single goals went to Mark Pulfer, Gordon Brown, Kevin Brown and Scott Hammond, who has had the best luck for Bears against Kings. "Hammond is someone we're going to have to watch," said Henry Thursday. "He's an excellent hockey player, we'll have to tie him up when we play them. And Monty Smith too. He's their captain, he passes the puck around well and he's persistent." Kings will be looking to everyone on the team to come up with a good effort in tonight's game, but the key to Kings play in the past has been Mare Duquette once described by Henry as the spiritual leader of the team. Henry said he plans to start John Duval in net for tonight's game, if his foot is not bothering him too much. Duval is suf- fering from a case of the gout, a recurring problem for him at this time of year, which his doctor attributes to nerves. "Ever since Midgets I've been getting a swollen foot around this lime of year, during playoffs."' Duval said Monday, he doesn't feel the pressure of playoff hockey affects his game and he enjoys playing before the home town crowd. "Paul (Henry) likes to play Joe (Rankin, Kings alternate goaltender) when we're on the road, he seems to play better away { 170; mn home." Bracebridge finished second to Kings in the Georgian Bay division of the Ontario Hockey Association Junior C league, but in their last meeting with Kings, they were the unfortunate victims of a slump snapping 12-0 shutout. Duval said earlier in the week, that he thought the series with Bracebridge would be a close one, despite the lopsided win in the last game. "T don't think we're going to blow anybody out of the rink, it'll be good close hockey."' Paul Henry said Bears strong point is their shooting and pointed to that as the main factor in the Bear's success over Kings in the early part of the season. "They use their point well, that's where they've beaten us before; with guys standing in front of the net and tipping in the shot." Henry declined to speculate on the length of opponent could be Stayner, Canadian Forces Base Borden or Gravenhurst, depending on the outcome of the playoffs, prior to Saturday's champions- hip. the series with Bears saying only that it would be a good series. "Who cares how long the series is, as long as we win, and it's gvod hockey." The first game of the best-of-seven _ playoff Starts tonight at the Penetanguishene Arena, beginning at 9:15 p.m. Longhorns looking for a rewrite of last season Ron's Longhorns will attempt to rewrite the ending of last year's Simcoe County Men's Basketball League playoffs Monday, when they take on Barrie G and G Disposers in the first game of the semi-finals in Barrie. Longhorns were eliminated by Disposers in last year's quarter finals and will face them again in the playoffs after the Barrie club ousted Stayner Mistics Tuesday. Longhorns' beat Disposers in their first meeting this year by 20 points, but lost the rematch by a few points playing with several men out of the lineup. Longhorns will have their work cut out for them again this year, as injuries have weakened them considerably. Dave "Tex"' Shalof is out with bad knees after sustaining an injury in the second quarter final game against Stayner Mistics and Ray Brien is Friday, March 3, 1978, tbat still handicapped with an injured finger suffered late in the regular season. Also missing from the lineup will be Dave Hamilton, who injured his knee in the final game against Stayner Monday, and will likely be out for the rest of the season. Stan Didzbalis, Longhorns rookie for- ward this year, has moved out of the area and it is not known whether he will be available for the rest of the playoffs. Also numbered among the walking wounded for Longhorns, is Chester Graham, who injured his ankle in the quarter finals. Longhorns play the first game of the series Monday, at _ Barrie Eastview Secondary School and return to Midland Wednesday, for the second game of the two game total point semi-final. Should a third game be necessary, - Longhorns will return to © Barrie Friday, March 10. Page 7 est 7 5 #
