Pops up Brad Schuman pops up at the top of the key attempting a field goal for Midland Secondary School in Georgian Bay Championship plav at MSS Monday. Schuman's effort wasn't enough for Midland to win and the seniors suffered their first and last defeat of the season to Park St. Collegiate of Orillia Suffering from injuries and missing two of their number, Midland's Ron's Longhorns showed their true grit Monday, as they defeated Orillia Peter Reino 71-53 in the third and final game of their quarter final basketball playoff in Orillia. Longhorns breezed to an easy one game lead in the first game of the series but met with stronger resistance when they returned to Orillia Friday, for game two and lost, forcing the third game Monday. The 77-70 loss on Friday, was a costly one for Longhorns who lost Dave "Tex" Shalof from the lineup when he popped a knee landing after a jump for a rebound. Shalof could not play for the rest of the game which weakened Longhorns' bench strength more as Stan Didzbalis was unable to play that night and will most likely be lost to the team for the rest of the season after taking a job in Brampton. Chester Graham _ in- jured his ankle in the game, further com- pounding Longhorns worries, and Orillia ex- tened their one point lead from the first half to win the game by seven points. Monday, Graham recovered sufficiently to play and lead his team to the win The game was another costly one for Longhorns, however, as guard Dave Hamilton injured his knee on the same type of play that put Shalof out. According to Graham, Shalof will be out for at least a week and Hamilton's condition was uncertain at press time Orillia let Longhorns take the lead early in the game and could only come within five points near the end of the first half. Longhorns extened their lead to nine points by the half and added nine more in the second half to win by 18. Kriss Watson and Chester Graham led Midland scoring with 19 Staffphoto and 29 points respectively but Graham credited the team effort on defence with the win. "Our big men did a great job on the boards 'and on defence. It was a good team effort."' The effectiveness of the Midland defence could be measured by the number of points scored by Stu Reynolds, Orillia's biggest threat in the series. Reynolds could hit for only six points from the outside and had to rely on his accurate shooting from the foul line to make his total of 21 points. In Friday's game Kriss Watson put down 30 points in a losing cause followed by Dave Dubois with 16 and Graham with 12. Watson scored 22 of his points in the second half, making a strong finish but not enough. Longhorns will now await the winner of the Stayner Mistics--Barrie G and G Disposers series that ended yesterday after press time. Should Stayner win the series, the first game of the semi-finals will begin tonight at Midland Injured Longhorns beat Orillia Secondary School. If Barrie G and G win, the first game could be held either in Midland tonight or in Barrie Tuesday.
