MSS wrestlers place 6th Wrestlers from Midland Secondary School placed sixth out of ten teams at _ the Bracebridge Novice Meet last week with a total of 22 victories and pumerous high placings in their class. The team of 13, fought against entries 30 men strong, in the Ontario- wide competition and did well in the 146 pound class. Kirk Swales advanced to the finals in that class but, lost the final match of the day and finished second. Chris Shearer won the consolation finals in the 97 pound class and the pair of Marvin Evans and Fred Webster finished third and fourth respectively in the 136 pound class after wrestling each other in the semi-final. "Everyone who went had at least one victory," said Midland coach Rick Leroux. "And even the new kids were really amazing." Leroux started. the wrestling program at Midland Secondary a short two years ago and has watched it grow from a small activity for a few interested students into a popular school sport. From the original two or three wrestlers the team has grown in number, to its present 13 members and promises to do well in the remaining seven tournaments planned for this year. Individual tourneys There are no league competitions for wrestlers and all events are in the form of in- dividual tournaments that allow teams to gain experience before the various Athletic Association finals in the spring. Members of the Midland Secondary School team include: John Pickett, Ken Paterson, Jim Forbes, Todd Clarke, Tom Walker, Ted Long, Walter Lenio, Chris Moreau, Brad Oakley, Swales Shearer, Evans and Fraser. Leroux said the team entered two tournaments in their first year of competition and the number of invitations to the events increases as the team travels more each year. Saturday, the team travels to Bracebridge again, for an invitational meet that will include fourteen schools from all over Ontario. "It's starting to catch on," Leroux said. "There isn't a sport that com- pares to it in the physical demands it makes on a person." Staff photo 23 Days $749. per person twin Many Departures in Feb., Apr., May, June July, Aug., Sept., Oct.
