Board to remain firm on Mountainview stand The Area Three Committee of the Simcoe County Board of Education intends to stick au. its recommendation that the Mountain School hot be used as a day care centre for the untrainable mentally retarded. : ii McCullough The question of the Board's responsibility for providing educational facilities for severely retarded children, was brought up again at its regular meeting Wed- nesday night. The Board received a letter from Robert Quinsey, the chairman of the Simcoe County Sub- District Working Group of the Ontario Association for the Mentally Retarded requesting that any final disposition of the Mountain School, now classified as surplus property by the Board, be postponed pending clarification by the Ministry of Education of the Board's responsibility towards severely han- dicapped children. John McCullough, chairman of the Area Three Committee, ex- plained to the Board members that as far as the committee is con- cerned, the Ministry's position is "'very clear', and that the Board is in fact, not responsible for the children. He went on to say that even if the Board was responsible for the children, of whom six are affected in the Mountain School case, the com- mittee would recommend Fire prevention is a must during the Christmas season Francis Miller, Midland's Fire Chief, warns that a happy Christmas can easily Hairstylists contend bylaw is outdated A town bylaw is creating a bit of a hassle between Midland's barbers and Midland hairdressers, who want to cater to men. The bylaw limits the hours that men can have their hair done from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. There is no bylaw covering women's hairdressing shops and conceivably, women could still get coiffured at midnight any night of the week. The bylaw was drawn up a couple of years ago, according to Reeve Sam Ancio. He pointed out that at the time, it had 100 per cent support from the barbers in the town. At a meeting of Midland town council on Monday night however,.a petition representing five of Midland's hairstyling establishments and barbershops was presented, asking that the bylaw be left as it is. However, Mrs. James Macey, who runs Gitta's Hairstyling, thinks this is discriminatory and wants to see the law equal to both men and women. She calls the bylaw "outdated." At the next meeting of council, Macey will present her own petition asking the bylaw be changed. On Tuesday, following the council meeting, she already had 13 names on her petition. The problem over the bylaw came to light about two weeks ago, when Mrs. Macey ran. an ad- vertisement in a_ local paper advertising evening hours for men's hairstyling. Reeve Sam Ancio was contacted by one of his colleagues in the bar- bering business and asked to inform the bylaw enforcement officer of the violation. He told council that he did it, not as a member of the Barber and Hairstylists Association, but as a member of council. Breaking law Mike Chapman, the bylaw enforcement of- ficer, informed Macey that she was breaking the law. He said she was not aware of the bylaw, and was not happy about not being allowed to stay open for men's_hair- styling in the evening hours. Deputy Reeve Bill Ogilvie feels that the legislation could be discriminatory. He asked council to refer it to the Public Safety Committee for consideration. Reeve Sam Ancio told council that he took exception to the word 'discrimination'. He stated that the purpose of the petition was to reinforce the barbershop owners positition on the matter. Ogilvie's suggestion to deal with it at a Public Safety Committee meeting was accepted. He also asked that women proprietors be allowed to attend the meeting. Alderman Nancy Keefe said she had dealt with matters concerning barbershops and hair- stylists before and would welcome the opportunity to deal with the problem in committee. see our display 262 King St., Midland 526-6981 MATHER'S CRAFT SUPPLIES Gifts with a difference SPECIALS °MACRAME New fibres eMACRAME Beads We have several NEW PATTERNS to learn from FREE LESSONS upon appointment Come in and MATHER' of FAKE FURS S A TREASURE HUNT STORE \"" up to $1,500. Christmas trees, whether real or artificial, are a prime area of concern, according to Miller. He warns homeowners who prefer natural trees to make sure they buy a fresh, green one and keep it outdoors until ready to decorate it. When brought inside trees should be kept in water and never allowed to dry out. Miller says before decorating any tree, the lights should be checked worn insulation or broken plugs. If you are buying lights, check to make sure that they are CSA ap- proved and check that any decorations you have are non-flammable. Never smoke around the tree. Miller says even a green tree will burn if ignited. Once Christmas day is over make sure that all the papers and wrappings are removed from under the tree. These only add to the flamability of the tree. Miller urges all natural tree lovers to set up their trees away from heat fireplaces, television sets and radiators. He also asks that homeowners try not to block access to doors and windows with their trees. To accommodate both your electric bill and to help prevent fire, turn off the lights on the tree at night, says Miller.
