Wells have provided a solid amount of screen material over the years. The Invisible Man, Things To Come, War Of The Worlds, The Time Machine, and The Food of the Gods have all been filmed The latest Wells novel to be adapted to the screen is the American International picture, The Island of Dr. Moreau, which is starting at the Odeon Theatre in Midland. The results are above-average for a film of its type There was an earlier version of this movie made back in 1933 under the title Island Of Lost Souls. In that one, hero Richard Arlen °§ was shipwrecked and washed onto the shore of a strange island where a sinister doctor was ex- perimenting on animals in an attempt to turn them into humans. The doctor was played by Charles Laughton and the leader of the beast-men was Bela Lugosi The new version of The Island of Dr. Moreau casts three excellent actors in the main roles Museum has fans! There was a time when no self-respecting lady would have thought of going out without am sorry Closing it speak to you Letting it rest on right I wish to which becomes obvious when viewing the displays of clothing from the late 1800's and early who are not usually associated with horror shockers. Burt Lancaster nlays Dr. Moreau, Michael York is the shipwrecked sailor and Richard Basehart por- trays the leader of the animal people. Unsettling Watching Burt Lan- caster as a mad scientist is a little unsettling, but Michael York's per- formance is excellent. He convincingly displays the character's bewilder- ment, curiosity, disgust and growing terror. York achieves the feat of making an interesting characterization of the hero, a role which is usually blandly per- formed in films of this type. Barbara Carrera supplies the romantic interest in the film. She is quite adequate in her role as the doctors' assistant, just as she was last year in her movie debut op- posite Rock Hudson in another science-fiction thriller called Embryo. Of the technicians working behind the scenes, special mention should be made of the makeup department. The makeup for the strange inhabitants on the island is outstanding: They include creatures who are half-bear, half-wolf,half- hyena, and so on. The Island Of Dr. Moreau follows the novel UP the new version to the and the original film modern day. The result is fairly closely. Wisely an interesting and ef- there is no attempt to jazz __ fective thriller.
