Q: The young girl next door is frequently kept home from school to take care of younger children in the family. Since the girl's absence is ex- plained by illness, the situation has gone un- noticed by the school. I only want to help -- what can I do? A: The principal at the school should be in- formed. The daughter is entitled to an education. Attendance is compulsory for all children aged six to sixteen. A parent or guardian who fails to ensure that their child attends school may have to pay a $100 maximum fine or put up a $200 bond which will be forfeited if the parent continues to neglect his responsibility. 2. Q: It upset us to learn that our son and his girlfriend have been skipping school regularly. How serious is this? A: A child who refuses to attend school or is habitually absent is guilty Gryphon play cont'd from p. 15 caricature of a little boy trying hard to please. The fact that this little boy is a grown man trying to cope in an adult world makes him pathetic. Don, played by Steven Whistance- Smith, is moody, cynical and wordy. Sissy, Vasey notes by Eleanor Edwards and Janet Wilson Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Edwards have returned home after visiting with Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Edwards and family in Elrose, Saskatchewan. While there Mrs. Edwards had the misfortune to break her hip and friends are glad to hear that she is doing well. 4 Mr. and Mrs. Ross Lane of Preston visited with grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Frank Rumney on Saturday. The sympathy of the community is extended to Mrs. John Vancamp in the loss of her brother Mr. Joe Strath of Elmvale. Mrs. Myrtle Nixon of Clearwater, Florida and Glen Nixon of Toronto are visiting with Mr. and Mrs. Jack Nixon of Vasey. Mrs. George McLay and Paul Robinson visited with Mr. and Mrs. Roy Graham of Dundalk for the weekend. Shorty's wife is played by Mary Haney (this is her third year at Gryphon) is a snippy little shrew. There's a silent session around that kitchen table that is comedy at its best. There sat Milly elegantly quaffing her cheap wine with extended pinky, and looking almost beautiful in the light of the gut- tering candle. Her airs quickly crumbled as Don and Shorty wolfed down the food and demanded seconds. People Are _ Living There is a good play, but not a great one. Playwrite Fugard has introduced us to a boisterous loveable and spirited woman that we won't soon forget. Milly, as played by Joan Orenstein is a magnificently real human being, and as such she is entitled to one flaw. of an offence and subject to the penalties under the the Canada Student Loans Act to give false or Juvenile Delinquents Act. The penalty will vary depending on your son's prior record. Two possibilities are a fine and/or a probation or- der. 3. Q: My son has been threatened with suspension. When can such an action be taken . . . can I do anything? A: A principal may suspend a pupil for any of the following reasons: (1) persistent truancy, (2) persistent opposition to authority, (3) use of profane or improper language, (4) wilful destruction of school property, (5) conduct injurious to physical or mental well-being of others in the school. The parent or guardian may appeal the suspension within seven days to the school board. If the ap- peal is successful, the suspension will be dropped. 4. Q: I strongly support government financial assistance for students in need but resent abuse of the programme. Is there no remedy? A: It is offence under misleading information. The penalty is a $1000 fine and all outstanding loans become payable im- mediately. 5. Q: Could you please explain expulsion? Does that mean a child is out of school for good? A: On the report of the principal the school board holds a hearing and may expel a student whose conduct is judged hard to control and injurious to other students. The parent is notified in writing of the hearing and is expected to attend. Even if the board decides to expel the student, it may allow him/her to return later. 6. Q: Is_ corporal punishment allowed in our schools and if so are there any limitations? A: Ateacher has to take the same care of a child that a careful parent would. Corporal punish- ment is not prohibited in Ontario but the Criminal Code of Canada requires that the punishment be for the purpose of correction only and that the force used should not exceed what is necessary under the circumstances.
