In 1649, following years of ferocious trade wars with the Iroquois, the Huron people' were overrun and forced to move from their homeland. Their villages were captured and destroyed, and with them, the Jesuit missions. Sainte-Marie was abandoned and burned by the men who had built it. Today, on the original site three miles east of what is now Midland, is a reconstruction of Sainte- Marie among the Hurons. Visiting the mission is a valuable experience. If Anniversary you've not yet had a chance to see what was the first community in Ontario, then the ex- tended summer hours should be taken ad- vantage of.
