Atwood tops list of Midlanders want to Who are the Canadian writers most in demand for a public appearance in Midland? Margaret Atwood heads the list, which has been on the check out counter in the Midland public Library for a OMB is Port McNicoll and Victoria Harbour will be having Ontario Municipal Board (O.M.B.) hearings for all the people in- terested in supporting or opposing the zoning bylaws. The Port MeNicoll hearing is slated for August 22, 23, and 24 but all this time may not be necessary. There are approximately 120 ob- jections to the zoning bylaw in Port MeNicoll but they mainly fall in two categories. One of these groups includes the people who own land in the beach area and would like the seasonal zoning changed so they may have per- manent dwellings there. This would require proper servicing of the land. The Ministry of Environment will be advising the OMB on this" matter. The second bone of contention in the Port MeNicoll area is the beach land which is zoned for industrial use. In Victoria Harbour residents will be able to voice their objections on August 9. Each property owner was givena copy of the Restricted Area Bylaw well over a year ago and was given 21 days to submit their op- positions. Annual antique show improving yearly by Marion Sleep Back in 1966, when the first Antique Market was sponsored by the Hospital Auxiliary, it was hastily organized by a group with considerably more en- thusiasm than knowledge! By the following year, the same group, realizing all the pitfalls and problems that they had so narrowly missed, wondered how that first "Market" managed to be so suc- cessful. Today, 12 years later, the Summer Antique Market, believed to be the second _ longest-running annually held show in Ontario, is still going writers meet librarian, Helen Delaney has invited a number of Canadian writers to participate in book nights at the local library. They've been well at- tended, and the list will give her some idea of the authors Midlanders most want to meet. Among those requested were June Callwood, Ray Guy (this year's Leacock Award winner), Charles Templeton and Mordecai Richler, and a gentleman listed as "Charlie Farkasin'"'. Always held at the Country Mill, a very suitable setting, the Market will open its doors Tuesday, July 19 at 7 p.m. and continue through Wednesday and Thur- sday, July 20 - 21, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Each year, the Market committee starts working in March, contacting dealers (there is now a waiting list); organizing the master floor plan of the Mill for the 18 dealers' booths; deciding how much and where the publicity and advertising dollars will be spent -- on posters, cards, banners, radio, television, newspapers and magazines; listing the work hours for auxilians who are always present to assist the dealers during the show Newcomers this year are Cormack Antiques, Mississauga and Paterson's of Dorchester. Returning for the second time is Mare's Nest Antiques, Dunsford. In their third year are Two Unicorns, Paris; Ivan's Antiques, Brampton; Tom Riordan, Willowdale. William Yates, Toronto is back for his fourth visit. For six years, Doris Turnbull, Brampton and The Red Lion, Collector's Bookshelf, Toronto have taken part in the Market. Mollie's Antiques and Mrs. Margaret Olson, "The Pennyweight" Toronto have renewed old friendships with auxilians for seven years. Mrs. Olson was one of the charter dealers, 12 years ago. The House of Charles, Port Colborne, Irene's Antiques, Trenton and Agnes Gillespie, Toronto will participate for the eighth year. It's the ninth year for Bourrie's, Willowdale, the 10th for Drake's, Toronto and the llth for Markham's, Toronto. For the secutive 12th con- year, Herb Merry, the 'Paulie Bergie" shop, Victoria Harbour, and the only "100 percent attendance" dealer will be back in his usual corner booth. For the first time, the admission price has been increased to a still reasonable $1.50. However, this year, the ticket also gives the buyer a chance on one of the many beautiful door prizes to be given away nightly. Made or donated by auxilians, these in- clude: three afghans, three needlepoint pic- tures, a baby layette, tablecloth, placemats, painting one piece of hammered copper and a large basket of edible "goodies". Stepping into the Market is like taking a step backward in time, to the days when the first little auxiliary boasting 22 members was formed more than 70 years ago. Come and enjoy!
