Entertainment Tension filled 'Black Sunday' tale of global espionage, terrorism by Terry Dupuis A new suspense thriller from Paramount Pictures and producer Robert Evans opens this evening at the Odeon Theatre in Midland. Black Sunday stars Robert Shaw, Bruce Dern and Marthe Keller in a tale of espionage and political terrorism spanning the globe from Beirut to Miami Beach. Marthe Keller portrays leader of the Black eptember terrorist organization. The group plots a_ large-scale terrorist attack in the United States, namely to disturbed Vietnam veteran pilot (Bruce Dern) who will fly the Movie re view blow up the Orange Bowl arena during the annual Super Bowl Game, when there will be more than 80,000 spectators present. Aiding the conspirators is an emotionally television blimp at the big event. Robert Shaw portrays a top Israeli agent who is hot on their trail and must race against time to thwart the Black September plot. Black Sunday is a little difficult to follow for the first fifteen minutes, but then the plot starts to fall into place. The tension begins to build steadily and never lets up. Black Sunday is a triumph for director John Frankenheimer, who returns to the eminence of being a top-flight director of thrillers. His previous good ones, all made over 10 years ago, included The Manchurian Can- didate, Seven Days In May and The Train. It started in 1969 and is a week of celebration to stimulate national pride. This year, there is a dramatic in- crease in the number of Lacrosse action for Canada Week. This is due to the concern that many people feel about the future of Canadian unity, so why not get together with our neigh- bours to celebrate our special week and show our pride in Canada and Midland Bantams take Alliston 10-2 Bantam: Alliston: Excellent offensive Graham and _ Scott play and good back- Jackson each scored one checking were the goal. The high number of reasons for Midland scorers shows the good Bantams winning over the Alliston team with the wide margin of 10 to 2. The Huronia Lacrosse game was played last Monday' night and Alliston was kept scoreless until the three- minute mark of the third period. Paul Hahn netted three goals, and both Keith Sager and Todd Jackson zipped in two goals apiece. Ian Veall, Gordon PEN THEATRE Wed., Thurs., Fri., Sat. team effort. promote the unity of Canada. Through Experience 77, Contact was able to hire a summer student, Debbie Hallyburton from Trent University. Debbie is certainly an asset to Contact. So, when you call you may hear a new voice, but you will find her very capable and I know she will be able to give you the information you require. Due to the lack of funds, Contact has been forced to cut back again but hopefully only for the summer months. The cheque we have long been waiting for arrived last week from the Provincial Government which will see us through the fall season; but what then? Contact is receiving donations from some of the town's service clubs, but more help is needed from the town and the communities at large to carry on into and through the year 1978. Perhaps, if you have never needed the help of Contact's services you may find you have little empathy or un- derstanding for Contact's plight, but you would only have to speak to one of our 500 callers per month, to be assured it's worth. Sad would be the day that an elderly person perhaps dialed 526-9333 to inquire about somethin; only to find that number has been disconnected. If you are concerned about the loss of Contact, why not dial 526-9333 and when the friendly voice answers, say ;- Hi, can we help you? Happiness is helping others to help themselves. Mary M. Reo AN = ur GREATER GEORG! BAY AREA recent years, the director has made one flop after another, and so the quality of Black Sunday is a welcome relief. The producer of Black Sunday is Robert Evans, whose last production was another top thriller called Marathon Man. Black Sunday has the same actress, Marthe Keller, in what looks like the start of a promising Hollywood career. Bruce Dern is also excellent in Black Sunday as the psychotic pilot, a type of role in which Dern has always been at his best. But the best performance in the film comes from Robert Shaw as the gritty dertermined Israeli agent. Shaw was previously seen in The Sting, Jaws and Swash- buckler, and he is currently in The Deep opposite Jacqueline Bisset and Nick Nolte. Double Feature An outstanding double comedy feature starts tonight at the Pen Theatre. The Silver Streak stars Gene Wilder as a book publisher who hopes to get a restful journey on an express train. Instead he finds more than he bargained for, when he becomes entangled in murders and art forgery. The Silver Streak is an exceptional entertain- ment, containing not only liberal doses of comedy, but romance, suspense and intrigue as well. Gene Wilder's performance in The Silver Streak is his best so far, and he is given good support by Jill Clayburgh's engaging performance. (Miss Clayburgh played actress Carole Lombard in last year's biographical pic, Gable And Lombard.) Equally effective are Patrick McGoohan as a murderous tycoon aboard the train, and Richard Pryor as a runaway jailbird who helps Wilder. The director of The Silver Streak is Arthur Hiller, whose previous movies include Love Story, The Hospital, and W. Cc. Fields And Me. The second feature with Silver Streak at the Pen is the uproarious Mel Brooks hit, Silent Movie. His assistants are played by Marty Feldman and Dom deLuise. Silent Movie abounds with sight gags and slapstick and it is probably Brooks' most inspired and inventive movie.
