Photo courtesy of Photo-Box Public health nurses still without contract Public health nurses from 28 of the province's 35 public health units are still without a contract or signs of an imminent settlement after 142 years of negotiations and waiting. Representatives of the nurses had hoped the Industrial Inquiry Commissioner's report on the status of their negotiations in the province would be released by June 11, the date they converged on Toronto to discuss details of the promised report. ahs But Bette Stephenson, Minister of Labour, decided to hold onto the report a bit longer, a move that prompted a telegram urging Ms. Stephenson to release the report. as quickly as possible, "This report has been in your hands since May 30, 1977,"; the telegram reads, 'In March 1976 you indicated to us that you would expedite matters between (Ontario Association) employers the ONA Nurses and the within 2 Married 40 years Mr. and Mrs. Edmund Buttineau of Highland Point, celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary on May 25. Salary parity Public health nurses in 28 health boards in Ontario have been pressing for salary parity with hospital nurses since their last contract ran out in December 1975. A retoractive _ set- tlement is one of the nurses' priorities as their salaries have been frozen at the 1975 levels and no compensation has thus far been made for in- creases in the cost of living. Public health nurses, including those in Simcoe County's Local 37, are also pressing for com- pulsory arbitration to prevent future strike or lock-out situations. A number of health boards have steadfastly refused to accept the inclusion of arbitration in the nurses' contracts. Ross Stephens, Chairman of the Simcoe County District Health Unit has gone on record as saying compulsory arbitration would take decision-making powers out of the hands of local health units. The Industrial Inquiry Commission appointed to look into the public health nurses' dispute is only the second such _ inquiry established by the labour relations board and was charged specifically with looking into negotiations Its recommendations however will likely be accepted by health units and public health nurses across the province.
