lIODE members present awards to Midlandgraduates The monthly meeting of the Kitchikewana Chapter of the IODE was held on June 14 at the Bayshore home of Mrs. Irene Holot. Regent Mrs. R.J. Caldwell opened the meeting with the prayer of the order. Secretary Mrs. Allison Gardhouse reviewed the highlights of the visit made in May by the Ontario IODE president, Mrs. E.L. Furness, who stressed the activities that prove the IODE cares for all mankind. She referred particularly to generic counselling programs, their need and, their Sherk's effective aid and their breadth throughout the province. She also talked of the 4,000 pairs of glasses sent by the IODE to Haiti and the Dominican Republic where Dr. Warnica of Barrie and his team administer help. This program is to be followed by a hearing aid program for which chapters throughout the province will collect for conversion for-children of remote areas. These children will also profit from the interest and skills of generous doctors in charge of this new endeavour to be known as 'Sting' noses out 'O'Race' by 20 seconds Don Sherk skipped the 'Sting' to a gold flag, first- place finish, in the Midland Bay Sailing Club's "'Series Two" race weekend this past Saturday and Sunday. Sporadic rain fall and gusts of wind of up to 35 miles per hour made it tricky sailing for club competitors, but Sherk hung on to win two of the three races in the weekend series In Saturday's opening "round the buoy race", about seven and one-half nautical miles, Sherk's Sting nosed out John Haste's O'Race but a meagre 20 seconds over the corrected times. The club's corrected time format is a handicapping system used in Olympic competitions to equalize differences in boat strengths and sizes Sting finished at 4605 seconds, while O'Race came second at 4626 seconds and Dorea II, skipped by Claus Henke came in third at 4695 seconds. Rains began shortly before the second race, and calmed the strong winds, making second race times somewhat slower than the initial race Haste's O'Race won handily over Sting in race two, with corrected times of 5295 and 5518 seconds respectively. Gord Teskey's Misty finished third at 5672 seconds. Sunday's competitors faced sporadic gusts out of the southwest that were uneven throughout the 16 nautical mile course. Sherk's Sting prevailed however, registering a corrected time of 10700 with Harvey Payne's O'Race coming second at 10843 seconds O'Race finished third at 11,155 seconds. Sting's two firsts and one second place finish earned Sherk the series championship, just nosing out O'Race, skipped by John Haste. In third place was Cari, skipped by Rick Szafranski. Wednesday evening concludes the Midland Bay Sailing Club's June evening race series. The club's Wednesday night competitions have been so popular that club members are thinking of extending it throughout the summer -- but time will tell bushes. Treasurer Mrs. James Tully presented her report, reviewing ex- penditures made and those anticipated. Mrs. J. Blackburn, Services' secretary, reported that four boxes of clothing and supplies had been shipped to Hamilton for distribution in necessary areas. She asked for suggestions, stating that personal property bags and children's bags are still being called for 1977 distribution. A new list has been issued regarding needed contents. Regent Cardwell offered to procure the lists, type them and distribute them as directives for each member. This activity would be considered her summer project. The education secretary report, com- posed by Mrs. S. Dane was presented by Mrs. A. Gardhouse. It centered around the annual awards to be made to Grade 8 students of Midland elementary schools. The recipients will be those who have been most successful in history throughout the full school term. IODE members will visit the schools to make the presentations and to congratulate the winners. On June 16 at 7 p.m Miss Ethel Wagg will go to Bayview, Mrs. Stanley Dane to Huron Park, Mrs. A. Head to Regent School; on June 17, Grace MeMullen will go to Park View, June 27 Mrs. R.J. Cardwell to Monsignor Castex School and on June 29 Mrs. Ted Brennan is to be at Sacred Heart On Saturday, June 30 at 10 a.m. award winners are asked to assemble at Midland Library steps for a picture taking by the press. A letter was read from Mrs. Karl Bertrand asking to be relieved of her duties as membership secretary. Regret was expressed at such a request. Mrs. Bertrand has so faithfully and well served in this office. Mrs. Ted Brennan will replace her. And in the spirit of Jubilee year, mention was made of the Jubilee picture of our gracious Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip which is to be made available as an abiding tribute and souvenir of 1977 celebrations. The Mrs. Don Marsh collection of watercolours which has been so ably reviewed by the artist herself at Midland Public Library is being ex- ceedingly enjoyed by Canadians across Canada, thanks to the Bay Gallery presen- tations in Toronto, Winnipeg and other cities. As a final and local comment fitting Jubilee Year, Mrs. Ted Brennan read an interesting ex- cerpt from her diary written on the occasion of her first visit to England and shared with us the thrilling impact inspired by her first view of the royal family. Mrs. Lanson Wright recently returned from London jubilee celebrations and com- mented on the effective and spectacular silver and blue decorations in London and the en- thusiastic delight of world visitors sharing in the ceremonies and celebrations. Regent Mrs. Cardwell thanked the hostess, Mrs. Holt for her hospitality before adjourning the meeting.
