MSE 1A4 FHH77149 by Shirley Whittington There was standing room only last Friday night in Sacred Heart auditorium _ at the Huronia Players' production of Paint Your Wagon, by Lerner and Loewe. In fact late comers had to be turned away - there just wasn't any more room. This happened several times during the play's four night run. Midland loves musical comedy, and Paint Your Wagon was received' with tremendous enthusiasm. Paint Your Wagon is not Lerner and Loewe's best musical. The songs are mediocre and aside from a lively can-can- by some high kicking dan- cing girls, the action seems to consist mainly of people standing around in clumps. However, the Players pulled their Wagon off with great skill .and polish. Backed by a solidly dependable musical ensemble Women's Day at Midland YMCA June 2 A day of learning is being provided by the Midland YMCA and Georgian College. 'Focus on Women' Day on June 2 wil) zero in on a number of topics which may in- terest women. Guest speakers will be directing seminars. on subjects such as creative play, women and the law, relaxation in the home and office, housewives plus more. Noon hour movies will be part of the program and for the evening they've slated a guest speaker from the Ontario Status of Women Council. Beverly Kirkpatrick's talk will include several of her concerns, stereotyping in children's school books, female's rights to sport facilities and protecting the in- dividuality of retarded children. Edith Weber, teacher at Georgian College in Barrie, will be guest speaker at the Women's Day and will be speaking on women in various fields including literature and media. "We hope that this day will have a spin-off, long- range effect," Ellie Van Der Heuvel of Georgian Coll "er ge ion Penetanguishene _ says. "We're hoping that, with a lot of public input, it could become an annual event." Focus on Women Day is open to all who wish to attend. (Nancy Capps, piano; Tom Plant, guitar; Brian Kitsemetry, base guitar; Larry Huth, banjo; Jim McConnell, drums) the male chorus was resonantly robust, and the many solo bits were delivered with confidence and excellent diction. Cheryl Smith, playing Jennifer Rumson, deserves special praise. Her singing voice was warm and sweet, and every phrase she sang was clear and meaningful. : The vocal highlight of the evening was the trio between Jacob (Ed Guthrie) Sarah (ris McInerney) and Elizabeth (Cindy Kelly). The three sang an evening prayer together in gentle harmony, then each of the ladies stepped aside for some nasty (the sentiment, not the singing) counterpoint. Mike MacVittie was impressive in his solo, They Call the Windc Maria, and as an offstage voice in the last scene. Other vocalists - Bill McInerney, Richard Gorell, Glenn Campbell, Alan Drysdale, and Raymond Holt, did so well that several mem- bers of the audience commented at in- termission, that they didn't know there was so much: talent in our community. Choral director Janet French gets full marks for inspiring a polished performance. Simple set The set was simple - almost stark - and one wonders why in the barroom scenes, tables and chairs weren't provided for the weary miners. Directors Lynn Gorell and Raymond Holt made good use of off-stage exits and entrances. This ploy gave the audience a good look at the dazzling ladies of the night - Catherine Gignac, Jean Kelly, Karen Redditt, Saskia Van Toledo and Florence Brock. The biggest mystery of the night was the quill pen with which storekeeper Murray Tyndall wrote out a bill of sale. Was it a fountain quill pen? Or did Tyndall have a pot of ink con- cealed in his vest pocket? This is a minor quibble. John Hansler was so evil and commanding as Raymond Janney, --Summer-- EMPLOYMENT for boys and girls as MIDLAND TIMES or Penetanguishene CITIZEN 'Wednesday carriers Opportunity for one day a week work awaiting that bill of sale that it didn't matter how it was drawn up. If you believe, as | do, that senior citizens have earned the right to a secure old age, free from anxiety and financial stress, that young people have the right to affordable housing in which to raise their children, that all of us have a right to work in whatever capacity we function best, that farmers have the right to grow and produce, and to bequeath the fruits of their lifetime labours to their children, that every child has the right to learn at his or her own rate, that the disabled, the blind, the deaf, the single-parent mother and children, deserve our help, then you believe as George Taylor believes. And if you agree that small business and big business, which are the backbone of this economy, have the right to expand and employ workers, that there is only one class of people in Ontario and that's first class, that we are all people, working and living together -- as individuals -- not lumped collectively as robots.
