Approximately 75 people attended the roast beef banquet at the Athenian Hall on Tuesday night marking the third year of the program in Midland. The Junior Achievement program is designed to give high school students some first hand experience with the business world. The group was divided into two small corporations and they had to decide on a product to make, then produce it, market it and with a little luck make some profit. The com- panies sold shares, paid salaries and at the end of the year liquidated. ote Jed eneleOut Achievement company Steelco was sponsored by Kindred Industries Ltd. and they produced metal ashtrays. Magrac, the MSS second in commercial contest Secondary School students recently had the opportunity to put their commercial skill to the test at the Simcoe County District Commercial Contest held at Eastview Secondary School in Barrie. This annual contest involves two students per event from each secon- dary school in the county. The students competed fol accuracy and speed in . events of typing, shor- thand, machine math, spelling, law, data processing and _ ac- counting. Midland Secondary School was well represented with 25 out of the possible 26 students in, ' Penetanguishene the 13 events. The team efforts resulted in Midland coming in fourth Pe leaerc. ec and Seco- ndary School came in sixth out of the 12 schools who participated. In Grade 9 typing Bev Fitzgerald of -Penetanguishene earned first place and Aline Lesperance received an honorable mention. In the Grade 10 Typing Janet Pause, also of Penetang, received honorable mention. The Grade 11 Typing event brought a third place to Marilyn Moriarity and Rick Nigro won honorable. mention. Both are from Midland. Lisa Magloughlin of Blue Mountain School of Music opens July 3 The Blue Mountain School of Music is of- fering several summer programs this year. Among them are or- chestra, band, con- temporary music and an art program, and they will be offered in two sessions, July 3 to July 16 and July 17 to July 30. The school is located just outside Collingwood, right at the base of the scenic Bruce Trail. Accommodation is available at Tyrolean Village Resorts in modern chalets, and the aim of the school is to develop amateur music for all ages in a vacation setting. Michele Gauthier, also of Penetang, placed third in the Junior Accounting and Frank Palmer of Midland was tied for second in the Senior Accounting. In the Law event Leona Tranter of Midland came in second and in the Data Processing contest Kim Pruess 'of Penetang earned honorable men- tion. Mayor Moreland Lynn was a guest speaker for the evening and opened his remarks by congratulating the Junior Achievers and _ the program. 'It's learning by doing and it teaches us about the impracticality of the school system,"' said Lynn. 'Until you've taken the risk and done it yourself it's just theory." Lynn made the analogy of the Rocky Mountains, you can see pictures and read books about them but until you experience them you never really know them. Mayor .Lynn told the Junior. Board president William Moss then made a short address to the group, giving thanks to the 'many concerned and announced Herb DeJong will be replacing him as president next year. Achiever awards Several presentations were made during the evening. Achiever Award pins were earned by Hans Hainke, Tony Savage, Wayne Stevens, David Swales, and Howard Walker and Junior Executive Award Pins were given to Claire Cox, Linda Cox, Carol Dey, Katherine Grosvenor, Greg Lyons, Sharon MacMillan and Laurel Massey. Mayor Lynn was presented with a pen and pencil set from the board of directors 'and the achievers gave him a book rack as their token of appreciation. The achievers also presented Kirshed Irani, the program director, with a gift and a special plaque for him is en route from Toronto. The advisors were recognized for their contributions and Moss presented each with a plaque and a bottle of . wine.
