Successful season for Midland team Women's volleyballnow a competitive sport __. by Bruce Finlayson Volleyball is growing quickly as a sport in Midland. As coach of the YMCA Women's volleyball team, that wrapped up it's season last week, I have watched the team grow from a group of women in- terested in exercise and fun into a team interested YOUR in playing well, im- proving skills and team play and in competition. In September, Jim Morache asked me to coach the team. It con- sisted for fourteen players eager to improve their volleyball skills; Bobbie Andrews, Mary Besley, Pat Brown, Cathy Cadieux, Laurie Cour- DRY CLEANING & LAUNDRY COMPANY LIMITED temanche, Carol Finlayson, Cathy Gibson, Barb Godridge, Kathy Henderson, Cindy Loughran, Sonya Mount, Jane Murray, Sue Presse and Anne Scott. Christy Swales joined the team in January and our resident fan was Gerry Trutwin. The team practised twice a week at St. Theresa's High School. Every second week they travelled to, Base Borden to play in the Simcoe County Women's Recreational Volleyball League. The league consisted of 10 teams and, at the end of the regular schedule, we had a record of 21 wins and 15 losses, good for fifth place. During the regular schedule every player received ample floor time, however during the playoffs, the team philosophy changed and if a particular line played well they were allowed to continue. The strategy paid off. In the quarter-finals, we defeated fourth place Base Borden in a two out of three series. In the semi-finals we met first place Barrie A who hada record of 35 wins and one loss during the regular season. Naturally, this was the series to win. The team played extremely well and won the best of five series, 15-8, 11-15, 15-10-4- 15, 15-2. The semi-finals and finals took place on the same night (April 12). The team played well but the strain of playing 10 games in one evening took it's toll. Orillia came out on top of a close series, 15-9, 6-15, 15-12, 13-15, 15-9. We had a great season - lots of work, lots of fun and lots of success. However the exciting aspect in my mind is that everyone is_ looking forward to next year.
