Recreation , Scene by Ron Marchildon Penetanguishene recreation qesidinator ' A minor softball meeting will be held on Thursday February 24, at 7:30 p.m. in the Arena Lounge. This is a very important meeting as an executive will have to be formed for this coming season. It is never too early to organize a good working executive to develop a good house * league, good all star teams, methods of raising money and appointing coaches and managers for both house league and all star teams. If you wish to see minor softball develop into something then your help is needed. Please don't depend on someone else to volunteer their services, take the bull by the horns and do it yourself. I would like to remind everyone about all the good hockey which will be coming up in the next few weeks with all our minor hockey teams being included in OMHA play downs. The Brule Garrisons also start their (playoffs with Bracebridge this week. I'm sure you will enjoy whatever games you decide to see. I'm sure that minor hockey will not mind if I send out a thank you to all people in the municipality who opened up their homes to the young hockey players during the Winterama Tournament. It would not have been a success without your cooperation. So on their behalf may I say thank you. "T really don't think I'll be back next year," Dorion said after his team closed the season with a 7- 5 win over Barrie Colts. "T enjoyed being with the players,' he added, and most of the players said they enjoyed working with the coach. Some felt it was Dorion who was responsible for turning the team around after their 14 game winless streak with Larry Banks behind the bench. The fact that he may be moving from Midland next season and the amount of time involved were factors in his decision not to coach again. The Flyers came out steaming in the first period, determined to prove they deserved to be in the playoffs. Barrie needed to win in order to avoid powerful Oak Ridges in the first round of the playoffs. The loss, combined with Orillia's win Saturday night, relegated Barrie to fourth spot in the standings and meant that Oak Ridges would indeed be their opposition. Oak Ridges finished the season with 65 points, Thornhill 41, Orillia 38, Barrie, 37, Owen Sound 27 and Midland 24. Five weeks ago Flyers were only two points behind Orillia in fourth spot but the team faltered during a stretch when they played six games in eight nights. Flyers had built up a 7-1 lead by the midway point of the game. The final score should have been Watch the elbows Flyers' Rene Peltier receives a friendly little hello from a Barrie Colts' defender as two of his teammates scramble for the puck. Flyers won their last game of the season 7-5. Staff photo higher as Midland blasted 24 shots at Hal Hake in the Barrie net in the final period. Andy Lacroix scored a goal in the first period, sandwiched between two by Larry Trottier. Dave Raymond beat Flyers' goaltender Joe Gibson to light up Barrie's side of the scoreboard and make it 3-1 going into the second period. Paul Robillard opened the scoring in the second, with Lacroix getting his second and Vince Decola making it 6-1 before Bob Coulson responded for Barrie. Rene Peltier got that one back just over a minute later on a wrist shot the Barrie netminder couldn't handle. Tim Clayden, Eric Cummings and Jim Angus all beat Craig Watson, who took over from Gibson at the midway point of the game, in the final period. Numerous stiff checks highlighted the latter portion of the contest, including one steamrolling bump off the hip of usually sedate John Beauchamp. Tempers at the Midland bench were naturally hot as Barrie players were overheard boasting, 'I'm in the playoffs and you're not."' Colts will also know what it's like to be out of action shortly because their loss to Midland puts them in an unenviable position in the first round of the playoffs. = Wednesday, February 23, 1977 B ES OY eee eee ee ee eS SL --= ]---- cornet MARSHALL = REAL ESTATE LIMITED REALTO "A REAL ESTATE BROKER FOR 30.
