All welcome - nur- OO a a ee ee ee ee ee eS ee A mini-review of major movies by Terry Dupuis The following are mini- reviews of some of the recent movies I've seen which I have _ not previously had the op- portunity to write up: Fighting Mad - Peter Fonda starred as a young farmer who finds that the community is being drastically changed by a strip mining operation. After a series of violent confrontations with the unscrupulous company which cause the deaths of his brother and father, Fonda declares' war against the company. Roger Corman was the producer of this suspenseful and well- paced little action film. Peter Fonda was well- cast in his role, but I thought that the best performance in_ the picture was given by John Doucette as Fonda's father. Nickelodeon - I per- sonally found this nostalgia-comedy disap- pointing on every level (acting, direction, and script), although the Sun critic George Anthony considered it to be one of the best films of the past decade. The story deals with the infancy of the motion picture industry, around 1912, when movies only ran about 10 minutes in length and were exhibited in cities in primitive theatres called 'nickelodeons". Ryan O'Neal, Tatum O'Neal and Burt Reynolds starred in this film which was directed by Peter Bogdanovich. I thought Nickelodeon was a real let-down, particularly in comparison with 'What's Up Doc?' and 'Paper Moon', two excellent earlier films which had the same actor and director. Death Weekend - This Canadian-made thriller was violent, but well- made and suspenseful all the way. A gang of 4 thugs invade the country home of a city dentist and torment him and _ his girlfriend. Brenda Vaccarro was convincing as the young woman victimized by an unex- pected weekend of terror, and Don Stroud was ef- fective in his usual role as a degenerate creep who is the gang's leader. The film was similar in some ways to the 1971 movie Straw Dogs which was directed by Sam Peckinpah. Harry and Walter Go to New York - This light- hearted and enjoyable crime comedy caper set in the 1890's starred James Caan and Elliott Gould as a pair of aymMeaet eiuer con - out-con a master swindler played by Michael Caine. This film was a sort of an earlier-period version of The Sting. Diane Keaton, best known to movie audiences as Woody Allen's co-star in various films, also starred in this picture. The Crazy World of Julius Vrooder - This film was released in 1974 and unfortunately was a box- office flog. It starred Timothy Bottoms as a patient in the psychiatric ward of a _ military hospital. His '"'insanity"' seems to make more sense than those who are trying to cure him. This movie was similar in many ways to One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, but it was much lighter in tone. Staff photo Inter-faith concert at Knox in Midland Sunday, February 20 Theé ookworm Agatha Christie biography a reviewer's tribute by Shirley Whittington Two books this week, which the rest of the world has_ probably discovered, but which I've just gotten around. to. The first is an amiable and carefully written simi-biography of Agatha Christie. The Agatha Christie Mystery cannot be called a true biography because Christie was a pathologically private 'person who left nothing in the way of memoirs, and who all her life suc- cessfully dodged in- terviewers. In spite of what surely must have been an awesome handicap for a biographer, author Derrick Murdoch has succeeded in drawing a memorable portrait of this remarkable lady who at her death in 1976, left behind hundreds of novels and short stores plus 17 plays, including The Mousetrap, which has Tickets on sale at the Legion. number of consecutive performances. In ad- dition, romantic novels under the pseudonym of Mary Westmacott, and several travel books. One of her romantic novels, Unfinished Portait, has provided Murdoch with an insight into how the youg Agatha Christie viewed her early years. But, Murdoch is careful to point out that Unfinished Portrait is by no means autobiographical. Christie never courted publicity, and the press had only one occasion to sensationalize her. In 1926, deeply depressed by the death of her domineering mother, and the break-up of her own first marriage, she ab- solutely disappeared for a fortnight. She never gave any explanation for her flight, but probably reality was so painful at the time that she longed to escape from it. she wrote six. sery tots too. 4 She divorced her first husband, and wrote and travelled. In 1930 she married a bookish young archeologist and the next ten years were the most productive in her career. The Agatha Christie Mystery is well, almost respectfully written. Murdoch (a mystery reviewer for the Globe and Mail) has read and relished every one of her books and he has pieced together the clues in to a readable and engrossing book. Christie-o-philes will be delighted with the extensive bibliography and with the well- organized index. This book is more than just a book about a famous writer. It's a tribute, from a man who respects, admires and understands Agatha Chrisite. A lady writer of a different stripe is Lotta Dempsey, whose No Life For A Lady is en- tertaining and timely papers. Example: She watched Princess Margaret and Anthony Armstrong Jones as they observed the filming of a Hollywood epic. Tony was absorbed in conversation with a camera man. Margaret was left alone. "She reached back"' says: Dempsey, "and touched him, beckoning with an imperious / finger. He came around, his face set, leaned over and whispered to her. Then he went back to the camera man, and I could see the anger in her face." Dempsey has _in- terviewed a lot of famous people--Trudeau, Cyrus Eaton, Eleanor Roosevelt, Ingrid Bergman, Noel Coward-- the list is fascinating, and so are her observations. I enjoyed rollicking Ey oe An inter-faith concert will bring members of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association to Midland Sunday, February 20. We made it last week and wound up with wall to wall pizza but it was so good nobody minded. It vanished before we had a chance to store any in the freezer. To make Rena's Pizza, you need the following: 2 envelopes yeast 2 teaspoons sugar 1 cup luke warm water 1 cup milk 6 tablespoons Crisco (I used margarine. It worked) 7 cups flour 1 teaspoon salt 3 eggs First, dissolve the yeast in the warm water, to which you have also added the sugar. Let stand 10 minutes. Next, melt the shortening, and add to the milk, and allow to cool. Sift the flour and salt together, and using one third of this mixture, make a well, add the eggs and beat. Add milk and shortening and then, the yeast mixture. Add remaining flour. Knead and let rise until doubled in bulk. Punch down, and form into individual portions, according to the number and size of pans you have. This will make about 5 12- inch pizzas. Oil your fingers, and plop the dough into the middle of the pan; and work it out toward the edges, so that you wind up with a thinnish crust, and a nice ridge around the outside. If you paint the unbaked dough lightly with oil or melted margarine or butter, it won't get brittle as it bakes. a sOLsabs boox : ~ Now®?'spread the dough with smushed up canned tomatoes (I like Unico for this) and bake in a 375 degrees oven for 30-35 minutes. Now the fun begins. You have already assembled bowls of chopped green pepper, pepperoni, mushrooms, chopped bacon or whatever you like on your pizzas. Decorate to taste, season with salt, pepper oregeno, and maybe thyme if you like it. Top with Moz- zerella cheese, and replace in the oven for 10 minutes. Be warned. It's a big recipe. But how else could you make your very own tower of pizza?
