Staff aie Social and church activity in Vasey The Vasey Community would like to extend, congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Cleve Long of 392 Whitmore Ave., Toronto who will celebrate their sixtieth wedding anniversary on February 14th. The Longs are former residents of the community and they operated the local general store in the 1930's. Ian Vasey of Hamilton and Bernice Vasey of Barrie spent the weekend at their home here. On Sunday they ac- companied their parents Mr. and Mrs. Ted Vasey to the special service at the Dalston United Church where former moderator Dr. McClure was the guest speaker. The Vasey's spent. the remainder of the day with Mr. and Mrs. Bill Drury and family. Billy-Jo Drury is spending this week with her grand- parents. Mrs. Earl Jones has returned home from the hospital after undergoing surgery and is reported to be progressing well. Her daughter Mrs. Murray Waples and Bradley spent a few days last week with her. Mrs. Charles Brown -has also returned home after spending some time in Penetang General and Mrs. Eldon Nixon Bradley Nixon and friend, of Toronto spent from Wednesday to Saturday and Mrs. Charles Brown. Mrs. John Wylie and Sandra of Stouffville visited on Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Nathan Edwards. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Edwards' spent' the weekend in Brampton with Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Hawke and family. Mrs. Craig Painter and Lyle are spending this week visiting relatives in Owen Sound. Anyone passing the Vasey United Church in the past few months will have noticed a new ad- dition. This' includes a new entrance, kitchen and washrooms as well as other renovations to the church basement. The success of last years church auction con- tributed greatly to the financing of the project. Because of the social enjoyment as well as the success of last years sale, another church auction is being planned for June 4 of this year. The annual meeting of the Vasey United Church will be held on Sunday February 13, at 2:00 p.m. Due to the weather conditions on January 29, the meeting was post- poned. Mr. and Mrs. Owen Smitham have returned home after spending the past two weeks visiting with Mr. and Mrs. Keith Smitham in Calgary. A family dinner was held on Sunday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. George Dupuis for Mrs. Eva McFarland on the occasion of her seventy eighth birthday. Those attending were Mr. and Mrs. Murray McFarland, and Susan, Mr. and Mrs. Ross McFarland, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Leonard and son, and Mrs. Reta McFarland of Orillia. The first meeting of the new 4-H unit "The Club Girl Entertains" was held on Monday evening February 7, at the home of Mrs. David Jones. Vasey United Church Women's report The Vasey United Church Women met on January 26th at the home of Mrs. Orville Edwards with twenty-one present. The devotions under the leadership of the program committee were opened by a hymn and a meditation read by Mrs. Nathan Edwards. The roll call "'Give an example of World Development" was answered and Mrs. Ted Vasey presented a film and script with many pictures drawn by children, on their im- pressions of World Development and how it all involves love. A vote of thanks was voted to the Vasey Women's Institute for the donation of money and kitchen utensils for the new church kitchen. Many of the members are busy doing quilts and other articles for the upcoming auction sale in early summer. Lunch was served by Eleanor Edwards, Mrs. Fred Edwards, and Mrs. Earl Edwards. Thump Orillia Kriss Watson leads Longhorns to playoff berth Ron's Longhorns men's basketball team has broken out of their short-- lived slump just in time to build up momentum for the playoffs. After losing games to Alliston and _ Barrie, rebounded win over Longhorns with a Penetanguishene and a 72-51 victory over Orillia last Wednesday. They're now assured of a playoff spot resting in third place with two home games remaining. The team was fired up against Orillia last week, working the ball around well and using the quick breaking pass again, after having shelved it for a more conservative Silver Stick Juveniles bow to Aurora Midland Juveniles were shut out 6-0 by Aurora and eliminated from Silver Stick competition in Mooretown on Saturday. Midland won their first game 1-0 over Bramalea Saturday morning. Dunc Brownell turned in the shut out performance and Indusmin Bantams Ross Prentice scored the lone Midland goal. Keeping a lid on the Bramalea offence was Midland's game plan and they followed it well, dropping a blanket over their opposition for most of the game. Midland's next game clip Collingwood Midland Indusmin minor bantams won their opening game in the best three out of five playoff series by downing Collingwood 4-2 in overtime. The first period was scoreless with both teams missing opportunities. Collingwood got on the board in the second period with Midland coming back early in the third to tie it up on Gerry Borsa's goal. 'Collingwood made it 2-1 with two minutes left in the game. Scott Kennedy sent the game _ into overtime with an unassisted goal with 17 seconds remaining. At the four minute mark of the ten minute overtime Brad Copeland scored unassisted to break the tie and Pat Brodeur added the in- surance marker 40 seconds later. Midland ran away with the game in the second half as Orillia tired and began to give away the ball. Double teaming Orillia players resulted in steals for the hustling Longhorns.
