In provincial court Man gets twenty months for breaking out of restaurant A 20-year-old Midland man was sentenced in provincial court' in Penetanguishene last Thursday, to 20 months definite, and 10 months indeterminate, on a charge of breaking out of the Panorama Inn, after committing an indictable offense. Daniel Vermuelen pleaded guilty to the charge, which arose out of an incident in which he hid in the basement of the hotel, waited until closing time, and then stole $365 and broke out with it. The crown attorney said the crime showed definite premeditation. Verme- ulen, who has a number of previous criminal con- victions, was sentenced to a further three months in jail on a charge of theft under $200. The sentences will run consecutively. A co-accused on the second charge, James Downer, 23, of Midland, had the passing of sen- tence suspended for 18 months. Possession Downer also pleaded guilty Thursday to a charge of possession of marijuana, laid in con- nection with a separate incident. The court was told he and another Midland man, Ray Leeking, 24, were stopped after police spotted the car in which they were driving, weaving westbound on Highway 12. Hit and Run The failure to remain at the scene of an accident led to a $150 fine for a 17- year-old Perkinsfield man in provincial court Thursday. Timothy Leroux pleaded guilty to the charge, laid on July 20 of last year. The court was told Leroux was proceeding south on Highway Zhe when another car pulled out of the lane from the new Huronia District Hospital in Midland, and turned south. Leroux's car struck the other car in the rear, and then Leroux turned his car around and headed north, leaving the scene. Judge .Montgomery cautioned him that in future, he would have to live up to his obligations to the other users of the road, before giving him the $150 fine. The court was told Quesnelle's car was heading south in the lot when it struck the two pedestrians. It did not stop, but proceeded into the parking: lot of the Brewer's Retail next door. The pedestrians, who were not seriously injured, followed him to the beer store, but he then drove off. Quesnelle was given a fine of $150 or 30 days in jail, and his driver's license was suspended for two months. Drive suspended Driving while his license was under a legal Suspension for non- payment of fines led to a $150 for a 23-year-old Elliot Lake man. Denys Veilleux was charged on June 7, after he was. stopped on High- way 69 because only one headlight on his car was working. The duty counsel told the court Veilleux had been living in Hamilton when he. learned his license had been suspended. He had to get himself, his car and his belongings back to Elliot Lake, and he did not know anyone well enough to ask them to drive his car for him. Judge Montgomery told him the circumstances surrounding the crime were mitigating to some extent, but they did not excuse the act. He gave him the $150 fine or 30 days in jail, and further suspended Veilleux's license. Police report Accidents abound on weekend The bad weather over the weekend took its toll, as Penetanguishene police investigated three accidents. On Saturday at 4:30, a car driven by Garry Leneham pulled out from Burke Street onto Lorne Avenue, and struck another car, driven by Danile MacMillan, of 83 Fox Street. Leneham's car sustained $200 damage, while $50 damage was done to MacMillan's car. There were no injuries in the accident, and Leneham was charged with failing to yield to traffic on a through highway. The investigating officer was Constable Michael Brady. Albert Morin, of 3 Poyntz Street, was charged with failing to yield from a private driveway, after he pulled out and struck a car being driven by Theodore Leblanc, of 211 Fox Street. Morin's car sustained $500 damage, and Leblanc's car received damages to the extent of $450. They say they have received a number of complaints about the practice, and point out that it can be both dangerous, and costly for the of- fender. Survey to be undertaken The local manpower center plans to conduct a survey among industries in the Midland- Penetanguishene area to determine what problems they may encounter in hiring adults between the -ages of 16 and 24 years of age. Over 40 per cent of those registerdd with manpower fall into this age category. Clients in this age bracket will also be canvassed to get their opinions.
