im 65 KING ST. P.S.S. defenders attempt to stop the Barrie Central offense in last Thursday's game. The game, which featured a 20 point deficit for the P.S.S. squad at the St. Amant praised Councillor Frances St Amant received high PeGia tase from Penetanguishene town council Monday night for her work in raising money for the McGuire Park lights A motion, put forth by Mary Rogers and seconded by Ken Tan- nahill read, "that Councillor F. St. Amant receive the highest commendation for her work with respect to the McGuire Park newly installed bali lights, and that she and her confreres receive verbal gratitude and praise for their un- daunted efforts in this respect, from not only the Council in the Town of Penetanguishene but also the citizens." Rogers said without the work of St. Amant, the lights would probably not now be installed in the P.S.S. girls win Penetanguishene Secondary School's girls basketball teams went into their matches against Midland Secondary School with the plan of keeping the scores low. This game plan, combined with the fact that it was the first game of the season for both teams and reflexes were slow, gave just the essay lates the Penetanguishene girls were seeking. PSS won the midget game 19-10 and the Junior game = _ 31-14. MSS's senior's grappled a close match away 'from PSS by the score of 24-19. "The seniors were off to an especially slow start,"' commented PSS coach Gail Kingsley, "but it was the first game of the season and only exhibition." Penetanguishene starts the regular season Thursday with a game at - St. Theresa's. MSS girls meet St. Theresa's Friday for their opener. Outdoor skating requested Penetanguishene re- sidents may get to skate outdoors this winter, if the Arena Parks and Recreation Board decides to make another attempt to install a rink in McGuire Park. Reeve Lionel Dion told town council Monday evening that he had received a number of requests for a rink to be placed in that location now that the lights have been installed. Council noted that attempts had been made in past years to prepare an outdoor ice surface in the park, but the weather had not been cooperative. »~ They decided to refer the request to the recreation board. eae etme Time to un fe 'a Sas load the ball end of the first quarter, ended in a 38-21 score. The team is hoping to do better in this afternoon's game against Collingwood in Penetanguishene. The P.S.S. opt mete quarterback was John Larmand. Staff photo Taiking sports & byTom Shields e/a | For the sports fans who were getting ready to see the 1976-77 edition of the Midland-Penetang Flyers tonight at the Penetang arena, you can now sit back and relax as the Flyer brass has come up with a postponement of tonight's game against the Orillia Travelways. In case there was any doubt, the main reason for the can- cellation is that the Flyers have very few players signed as yet because of the delays in getting on ice for this year. However after just a couple of practices, it looks like the Midland Flyers wili have a top rate team once they get their legs in shape. But, there will also be a lot of holes to fill from last year's team. Seven of last year's regulars have left the area, meaning that most positions are open to a battle from youngsters wishing to challenge for a spot on the team. The Flyers unloaded Mike Crawford, last season's netminder, and defenceman Norm McCauley both to Newmarket in the Junior "A"' loop in a straight cash deal. Midland was offered players in exchange, but McCauley was not a high rated blueline man last season and the Flyers are loaded with goal-tending talent this year. Other defencemen to leave are Bill Stoneman from Kansas City who has gone to Pembroke Junior "A"; Jim Reid who has moved out west with his family; Pat Cooney who is now with the Owen Sound Junior "A" team; and hard-rock Ron Morrison who is attending university in Ottawa. This leaves only one defensive holdover from last year in Elmvale's Dan Rowatt, who the Flyers considered their top defenceman. Rowatt also led a lot of rushes a la Dennis Potvin and like the rugged going. Defence is wide open and could also be the problem point for the green machine this season, as it always has been for them in Junior "B". In between the 'pipes', the Flyers look like they might be able to go with local talent at this spot as Joey Gibson with three years experience returns along with a crop of five good young prospects. Dunc Brownell of Midland has come up looking strong in early practices. Up front, the Flyers should be able to match goal-scoring with most Junior "A" teams in the area. Paul Robillard goes into his third year in Junior "B" and will definitely be a threat to win the scoring title. Hard working Andy Lacroix,a strong winger will return to the lineup after missing the last part of the season last year with a shoulder injury. Dead-eye Rene Pelletier. formerly with the Hamilton Red Wings or Fin- cups will be back with the Flyers and he holds the record of the fastest three goals scored by one player in Junior "'B" hockey which he set last year, as he notched the hat trick in 29 seconds. Dave McClung will also be back with the club after missing one season with illness. Two Junior "'B"' veterans will also be back in the lineup in Guy Ormiston, a top checker, and Larry Fallon who was with the Barrie Colts for a few seasons. John St. Amant from Penetang has also looked good in the practices. And for added strength at playoff time, Ken Fox, the league scoring champion two years ago will still be eligible to play this season, but will miss most of the regular season as he plays with and attends Trent University in Peterboro. Because Junior "'B" hockey is quite time consuming, the Flyers will go with two coaches in Larry Banks and Edgar Dorion, both having plenty of Intermediate "A" experience. This could also be a plus as many pro teams are now using the two-coach system. Summary The Flyers should have a high scoring team with a few players having a shot at the scoring championship. I can't see them setting any records defensively though, unless they find a few big, hard-hifting defencemen as well as a policeman like they had in Paul Shaw. As for goaltending the goaltenders are only as good as the forwards back-checking and the defence taking the opposing forwards out of the play. If they don't accomplish this, it could be a long year for the goaltenders. With Banks and Dorion at the helm, some of their sportsmanship should rub off, and the Flyers will take less of the stupid penalties and in particular fewer misconducts which you don't need anyway. One thing the Flyers will be and that is fast and you can judge for yourself on Friday night when they host either Thornhill in a regular season game or The Owen Sound Junior AA "A"' team in an exhibition contest. Barrie Central wins 38-21 GEORGE MARSHALL REAL ESTATE LIMITED REALTOR "® REAL ESTATE BROKER FOR 30 YEARS" --= LAND 526-2293 [i P.S.S. drops season opener The Penetanguishene Secondary School football team went down to defeat at the hands of the team from Barrie Central Thursday afternoon by a score of 38-21. Fullback Steve Robillard scored two touchdowns in the game, one on a short yardage plunge, and the other ona double reverse. Quar- terback John Larmand scored PSS' other major. Dave Parent kicked a single, and Lloyd Cascagnette kicked a convert for the other scores. Assistant coach Larry Banks blamed the defeat on "basic inexperience". He said most of the players had never played in a league game before. By the time they settled down to play, at the end of the first quarter, the score was 20-0. Banks said, 'After the first quarter it could have gone either way." The team plays against Collingwood's senior team this afternoon, and Banks said they don't have any particular strategy for that game. He said "We're just going to have to play it by ear."' With the short schedule of seven games, and only the top four teams making it into the play- offs, the P.S.S. team cannot afford to lose many more' games. Banks said a win against Collingwood is a necessity for the team. They go into today's game with one player, Lloyd Cascagnette, on the injured list. A shoulder muscle he tore during the summer was reinjured in last Thursday's game. Today's game is to be played on the PSS field at 3:00 p.m. Track meet to be held in Midland Monsignor Castex School will host the Area 3 Elementary School Cross Country competition this Saturday beginning at 9:30 a.m. Twenty schools from Garrisons hockey team is getting organized The Penetanguishene Garrisons of the Georgian Bay Intermediate "C"' hockey league are now in the organizing stage. Team representative Alvin Robillard said yesterday that details of the schedule to be played this year will not be known until after a league meeting in Barrie Thursday night. » So far the league has only four'teams in it, the Garrisons, and teams from Bradford, Bracebridge and Oro. Mark Dahmer, who has been involved with the team for the last few years, said Parry Sound has been trying to organize a team to play in the league, and has plenty of players, but does not have anyone to take care of the team. Robillard said, "'As far as I know right now, the league is trying to get another couple of teams." He said one of the problems the team has had in the past has been that prospective players have been worried about the travelling involved. ~ He said with the league as it stands now, that shouldn't be a problem this year. Meanwhile, the Garrisons fastball club is facing the Wyebridge Warriors of the Simcoe Rural Fastball League in a best three out of five championship series. The first game was last night after the Citizen went to press, and games are to be played Thursday evening under the lights at Wyevale, and Sunday afternoon in McGuire Park. Flyer's opener postponed The Midland Flyers' opening game, scheduled for tonight, will be rescheduled later in the season because _ the Flyers are not ready for it. Team president Ron Sauve said the Flyers have been late signing all their players, and did not get onto the ice until Sunday. { He said '"'There's just no way we could be ready fgr it." The game was to have been against the Orillia Travelways in the Penetanguishene arena. No decision has yet been made about Friday evening's game, Scheduled to be played in Penetanguishene against the Thornhill team, but there is a chance it too will have to be rescheduled. the Midland-Penetang- uishene-Elmvale-Tay Medonte area have been invited to compete in the meet. The defending champion is Corpus Christi School in Penetanguishene There will be three races over the 3,000 metre (about 2 miles) course. The first race at 9:30 will feature intermediate boys, the second at 10:00 is for all girls and the third at 10:30 is open to senior boys. The course follows Old Penetanguishene Road to Dominion Avenue, then east on Dominion to a pathway leading toward Bayview School At Ottawa Street the course turns west to Woodland Drive and onto Howard Street then back to Monsignor Castex School The organizers hope area residents are not inconvenienced by the early morning runners. The winning school will win the cross country trophy and individual competitors from the school each receive ribbons while the in- dividuals who win their divisional races will receive Olympic-type gold medals Organizers are hoping the course will be kept free from car traffic on the morning of the race. Spectators will be welcome to watch the runners along the course. sports calendar Summary of park light fund revenue Total Donations received $3,697.20 (from private citizens, service clubs, business and industry) und Raising Activities ance-a-thon Dance -- July 2nd, 1976 Jack and the Jesters Exhibition Game California Cuties Softball Tournament Boat Cruise Bobby Orr and Co.
