| Blackbirds cause havoc _ by E. Lorraine Orr Blackbirds, Beware! Farmers in the Coldwater area are not happy about losing great quantities of their corn and grain crops to the ever multiplying blackbirds. A field requires much preparation before' the corn can be planted and more afterwards. Fer- tilizer, having a high content of nitrogen, is added to the field, along with animal manure. For 100 acres the cost is ap- proximately $2800. The corn, costing $38 per unit of fifty pounds, is then planted along with more fertilizer. Weeds must be controlled by spraying, at an approximate cost of $800. To have all this expense and then lose seventy-five percent of the crop to the blackbirds is more than any farmer ean afford. Some farmers have resorted to shot guns. using many cases of Shells as they regularly startle the birds in the field. Another method is the "hanger". A machine operating ona timer basis with a loud bang also disturbs the birds. A third temporary prevention is an alarm which operates on a 12 volt battery producing a loud chirping distress sound which frightens. the birds However, all this really does is cause the birds to fly to another field. Definitely not a satisfactory solution. Last October following a meeting of concerned farmers, a committee was formed to find an answer. Meetings were held in Toronto with representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture and Food and_ the Ministry of Environment. The chemicals Avicide and Avitrol have been in the experimental stage at the University of Guelph to discover the most ef- fective repellent. Special permission has been received to use the two chemicals in ex- perimental testing on the farms of Stewart Alderson, Cecil Biggs, Frank Durnford, Joe Graitrix and Howard Hawke. The insecticides have been sprayed on a set number of acres by low-flying airplanes. This is a yield test to determine how much corn could be brought to maturity if not disturbed by the blackbirds The farmers do not have only the problem of blackbirds: they must also contend with the supply of cracked corn of which every one- hundredth piece of corn is treated to cause the bird eating it to become ill The bird then starts a distress call and the other birds are warned away Mr. Biggs watched over one thousand birds land in his corn field on Tuesday following the spraying on Monday night He reported that within three-quarters of an hour in Coldwater opposition from the conservationalists who do not want any harm done to the birds, regardless of the damage they are doing The question is should the farmer con- tinue feeding the birds or should he destroy the black birds so the crops can feed the people? the birds began to rise in a disturbed way and finally flew away not to return. The other insecticide is a spray put on the corn stocks which irritates the birds' feet when they land on the plants.
