Susan Stanbury, Home Economist for the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food collected a group of favourite recipes from Simcoe County's best cooks. Loop on ae 4 97 Description and Size Beige Low loop 12 x 17'4" Movie review: The Omen -- not another rip-off by Terry Dupuis The Omen, which begins Friday at the Odeon Theatre in Midland, is not only one of the best occult films ever made, it is one of the best movies of any type that I've seen this summer. The Omen is not, as you might expect, merely another rip-off movie of The Exorcist. Instead it is a serious and compelling supernatural drama which can stand on _its own merits. In fact, I like it better than any of its predecessors (including Rosemary's Baby and The Exorcist). The Omen is more subtle than The Exorcist, and it does not rely on bombarding the audience with vomit- inducing and nauseating images to achieve its effect. Yet the unsettling of the nerves, the feeling of dread and unease and helpless terror The Omen generates upon. the audience is every bit as strong as anything in The Exorcist. I found The Omen to be more believable somehow than either The Exorcist or Rosemary's Baby. While I was watching the film I found that I had little difficulty in shed- AT OUR MARKHAM STORE ONLY ding my disbelief almost completely, so adroitly is this movie made. It is a model of believable characterization and fast pacing, of convincing dialogue and well set up scenes which make us believe. that what is happening on the screen is really happening rather than being sheer fantasy. The Omen is one of those movies in which very little of the plot should be given away. So all I'll reveal about it, is that it attempts to relate a biblical prophecy to our modern day. The prophecy itself is an actual historical one set down in the Book of Revelations." It predicts Armageddon, the final confrontation between good and evil and the destruction of the world, which will be signalled by the birth of the Anti- Christ - the son of Satan - in human form. The Book of Revelations prophecy states the three con- ditions which will be present in the world when this will come to pass. And some biblical scholars have noted that the 1970's fulfills all three of these conditions. The acting is extremely IT'S THRIFT DAYS natural and convincing. Gregory Peck came out of retirement this year to appear in The Omen as a politically influential diplomat whose family becomes engulfed by the terrifying fulfilment of the prophecy. Peck's performance is one of his best ever, and he is ably supported by Lee Remick and a predominantly British cast. The superb direction is by Richard Donner who is new to feature movies but who has been a director of television shows for many years. If The Omen is any indication, Donner has a promising movie career ahead of him. The Omen was filmed at Shepperton Studios in England, and on location in England, Rome and Jerusalem. This on- location shooting is another factor which greatly contributes to the believability of the story. The Omen is suspen- seful, disturbing, frightening and thought- provoking. Such is _ its persuasive power that many movie-goers, on leaving the theatre, will be wondering to them- selves: Could this really happen? Perhaps the finest tribute to The Omen was the comment made by Clyde Gilmour in his column to the effect that this movie was enough to even scare the hell out of an atheist.
