In the final game they defeated the Angels by a score of 14-13. Staff photo The Penetanguishene midget girls softball team got its revenge Monday night as it clobbered Elmvale 20-4. The girls' only loss of the season was their 15-14 squeaker against Elm- vale two weeks ago. The regular pitcher, Brenda Columbus, was injured in a recent game and the Penetanguishene girls took full advantage of the team's misfortune. The game started off slowly with no runs for Mosquito soccer team either team in the first inning. In the second it was still close with Penetanguishene picking up two runs and Elmvale scoring once. But by the third inning the gap began to widen as the Penetanguishene team went ahead 7-2. The real clincher, however, was the sixth inning. After scoring three runs in the fifth, the Penetanguishene girls, sparked by the good solid hitting of Janet Belcourt, scored ten runs to put the game far out of reach for the Elmvale team. The Elmvale girls scored their other two runs in the sixth and seventh innings. The victory for Penetanguishene means the girls are in first place for the time being, but if both teams maintain their high calibre of play they could end up tied for first place at the end of the season with their only losses to each other. keeps on winning The Penetanguishene team in the Mosquito division of the Simcoe County Minor Soccer League staged a shooting gallery last Thursday night as they defeated the team from Lafontaine by a score of 14-1 Peter Roi, who has been the team's high scorer since he was moved up to "For the good of hockey" the forward position, accounted for six of the Penetanguishene -- goals. He played goal tender for the first part of the season. Blair McReynolds scored five times, and David Robillard, Ken Leclair and Mike Bonnin scored one each The team plays again against the tomorrow Flyers JuniorA bid turned down The Ontario Hockey Association has turned down the Midland Flyers application bid for a Junior A team. Flyers president Ron Sauve has not yet been officially notified of the OHA's decision Monday and was informed by press reports. Although - reports quoted OHA officials as having made the decision "for the good of hockey"', the Flyers organization can't understand it. Last week the Southern Ontario Tier II Junior A league accepted Midland's application for a team in the league. "All the teams in the league are in full agreement', Sauve said Monday. Organizers from other teams in the league '"'are backing us 100 per cent"'. The league itself '"'wants us badly and they ac- cepted us", he added. Sauve and his colleagues are upset and have appealed the OHA decision. A lawyer on the Flyers executive will be representing the Flyers in the appeal. Indians beat Angels for Boys HouseLeague title The Indians are the Penetanguishene Boys' House League Softball champions. They beat the Angels 14 - 13 in the final game of a tournament held Sunday to win the title. In the opening games of defeated the Eagles 30-7, and the Expos won their first game by default. This gave the A's and the i:xpos the right to go on to play the two first place teams, the Angels and the Indians, for the right to go into the finals. Expos 10 - 5, and the Angels defeated the A's by a score of 24-11. In the final game, the Angels, behind by a score of 14-9 going into the last inning, but on a scoring burst to pull to within one An example of the league's support for the Flyers case, one: team representative offered to help sponsor a Junior B team in Penetanguishene, if Midland were allowed entry in Junior A. Sauve said last week that he hoped the higher calibre of hockey played would attract more fans. to the games. "We didn't go in blind', he added. "The executive talked about the decision for many meetings." The Flyers have lost money in recent years, and "'it isn't going to cost a whole lot more to operate a Junior A team", Sauve said. Junior A regulations do not limit the number of import players allowed on the team, while Junior B regulations allow only seven imports. 'But I really don't think we'd have any more imports in Junior A than we've had in the past", he said. Ontario Hockey Association officials were unavailable for comment the tournament, the A's The Indians beat the but never quite caught up. 0" Monday. Talking Sports by Tom Shields The All-Star break is here. This usually means that we are now mid-way through the baseball season and the old saying goes that whoever is leading the divisions at the All-Star game, will end in first place at the end of the season. Indications now are pointing strongly to Philadelphia and Cincinnatti in the National league and the New York Yankees and Kansas City in the American league. As for the Montreal Expos, they are now 29 games out of first place and they are hopelessly lost with the worst record in the major leagues. As it stands right now, I seriously believe that an all-star team picked out of the South Simcoe Baseball loop could give the Expos a good game, atleast before Gary Carter returns to the lineup. The South Simcoe team might not get many hits off someone like Woody Fryman, but then again, it's a proven fact that the Expos can't hit either - especially when we watch their batting averages on TV on Wednesday nights. In fact the whole starting lineup together hasn't hit as many home runs as league leader Dave Kingman of the Mets who has smashed 30 and has a shot at breaking Roger Maris record of 61 homers in 1961. The Expos are now in their eighth season as a major league team and they came close to winning a pennant once, only because the other five teams had trouble in playing 500 ball. The most interesting point to make today is by flashing back to the 1969 and 1970 seasons, when many people stated that although the Montreal Expos were a new team and the first Canadian team to get a major league franchise, they had the top management in baseball in the persons of Jim Fanning and Gene Mauch. This is now at best described as a "joke". In the first two seasons that the Expos were in the league, they were constantly battling with the Philadelphia Phillies to see who would stay out of the basement in the division. But look at the Phillies today...they'll probably clinch their division by mid-August at the rate they're going. Former du, \ Expo Rusty Staub will be a starting outfielder for the American League in the all-star classic and its possible that Ken Singleton will be in the game as well. Steve Renko is now winning games for the Chicago Cubs and Mike Torrez is winning for Atlanta. They got long-forgotten Willie Davis for Mike Marshall when Mike was at his peak and so on. Now people are looking towards the new Toronto team to salvage some wins for the teams north of the 49th parallel. UNSOLD SPORTS BOOKS Each year there are a lot of books about sports or sports-heroes which become good sellers.
