It is also a good attention grabber, and Jan has had a fair amount of attention since he moved to Penetanguishene _ three years ago. Born in Holland, Jan spent part of the war years in a concentration camp. He, along with all the young men between 17 and 25 in his village, was seized in reprisal for the killing of a high ranking Nazi official. After the war, he used his carpenter's skills in rebuilding Southern Holland. In 1952, he and his wife Brigitte, emigrated to Canada. In Toronto, he suffered an accident which might have ended the career of a less determined painter. He fell from some high rafters and telescoped the arm he had put out to break his fall. "Tt took about ten years and another operation before I had full use of that right arm,"' he says. Fortunately, he's almost totally ambidextrous, and he carried on with his painting and drawing "Your mind, your eyes - these are what you paint with,' he says. 'Your hands are just the tools An artist can loose both his hands. As long as his eyes are all right, he'll find a way." Brigitte and Jan bought the old Penetanguishene foundry, on a six-and-a- half acre site on the Bay. He's converting it into a Marina and when he isn't busy outside, he's hard at work at his easel, where he puts in four to five hours daily Oils are his preferred medium and he applies them in thick strokes or with light translucency, depending on his subject. He is also a pathological sketcher, ANNIVERSARY SALE PRICED MODERN MAID .. The RANGE that WASHES dishes... His pencil drawings are among his most attractive work The walls of his studio- cum-livingroom are filled with his paintings. Many of them are of the Georgian Bay, or of sylvan township scenes Others are "memory paintings" of the old country, with steep- roofed cottages and windmills Most recently, he exhibited at the Penetanguishene Win- terama. His paintings are also on display at two local restaurants. In May, he will be hanging his work in the Midland Public Library Although he is a car- penter by trade, he does not do his own framing "I'm not set up for it, and it takes so long. When I first started selling paintings in Toronto - for maybe ten or fifteen dollars - people would sometimes reject them, saying that for that money they could get a nice picture in Kresge's, with the frame already around it!" The man who has been drawing and painting since he was a child, and who never travels without a pocketful of sketching pencils, still thinks he has a lot to learn about his art. He has signed up for a Canada Manpower course in Commercial Art in Toronto, for two reasons - one artistic, and one eminently practical "First," says Jan, "'I am still looking for my own style. And I feel I sometimes spoil a painting by treating it wrong. The second reason is that I want to learn more about the graphic arts. Sometimes you get a commission, and you have to know how to do what people like if you want to make a living." He has taught painting in the area, and says he has learned a great deal from his students Jan Kee admires the super-realist work of Salvador Dali, and the young Picasso. "His later work is still art, but it is something I don't per- sonally care about. I am also very interested in the work of Andrew Wyeth - he is a miracle. He sees darn' nice things." So does Jan Kee, and a lot of the things he sees are on Géorgian Bay which is literally at his back door. I asked him what he'd do if he won a million dollars in the Olympic Lottery A thoughtful look came into his Delft blue eyes "Oh - I'd stay right here and take my boat and fish, and go out in the Bay and paint all kinds of things. There are a thousand pictures out there." Big fish contest Two lunkers smashed all-time records in the Big Fish Contest, sponsored by the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters and Molson's Brewer: (Ontario) Ltd. A 51 pound, 8 ounce Maskinonge, caught by Robert Geister, Illinois, was hauled out of the waters of Pipestone Lake in the Rainy River district. Eight big ounces made the difference between this Muskie and the 1963 former record holder. Russell Kenwell, Wasaga Beach, brought in a 29 pound, 2 ounce Rainbow Trout on the Nottawasaga River to break the other record in the Big Fish Contest. The Rainbow was Kenwell's second extraordinary catch of the day. The fish hit minutes after Kenwell released a sea gull that had become twisted on his line. Russ Garvin, Ohio took top honours in the Nor- thern Pike category. His 35 pound Northern lat- ched on to the hook at Trapnarrows' near Thunder Bay.
