Citizen sports beat by Penetanguishene recreation coordinator This past week saw our two girl's teams who are centered in the P.W.S.U. playdowns receive notification about who and where they play. The Intermediate "C" champs from last year have been moved up a couple of classifications, and must now play in the "A" division. They will meet a team from Sudbury in their first round. Meanwhile the Midget Team which was classified "E"' last year has moved all the way up to the "B"' classification and will meet Downsview in their first round. Dates and times for both teams have not been established as yet. Still with softball, there will be a tournament held in Penetanguishene on Sunday August 3. This is the Georgian Bay Midget Girls annual tournament and includes all seven teams which play in the regular league. It looks as though we may have to finish our Senior Girls House League in the fall. We have had many problems getting all the games in. I will contact the coaches later on in the summer to arrange the first game and try to arrange playoff dates. Sailing classes still have openings for the next three weeks. The children who have been in- volved have enjoyed the program very much. Parents should ask their children if they would like to register for these classes. I'm sure they would enjoy them. Our second session of swimming classes will begin on July 28. If you would like to register your child or re-register please pick up a registration form from the Municipal Office. If enough people register for Tennis in- struction this week we will hold lessons for "nother week from July 28 to August 1. Please submit tennis registrations early this week to give us an indication as to how many children will be involved. Application forms are available at the town office. The Juveniles downed a team of older area players 21-8 last Thur- sday at St. Joseph's Public School and whipped the Junior Forest Rangers 25-14 on Sunday at McGurie Park. Rob Maracle was the Although Monday's loss stops Anne's win streak at 28 straight sets it doesn't affect her standing as the number one seed in the 12- and-under _ girls-tennis- division in Ontario. Her next major tournament will be the Ontario Open from August 11 to 16 win two winning pitcher in both games. In the Thursday game Paul MacDonald collected five RBI's. Lafontaine and Garrisons continue their winning ways Lafontaine edged the Penetanguishene Expos 10-8 last Thursday at McGuire Park in one of the major matchups in last week's Georgian Bay Fastball League play. The Lafontaine team led by the Forget brothers; Andy Forget pitcher Andy and catcher Robert, has been burning up the league with a record of nine wins and two ties against only three losses. Andy. Forget was the winning pitcher while Lloyd Leroux took the loss. Lafontaine scored six runs in the fifth inning to open up a 7-3 lead on the Expos before finally winning the game 10-8. Robillard belted a homerun and was the winning pitcher. Penetanguishene teams bow out Penetanguishene's two entries in the Wyevale Fastball Tournament didn't fare too well on Sunday. The Penetanguishene Garrisons managed to win a game before being edged 4-3 by Perkinsfield. Ken's Esso, however, failed to get beyond their opening game as they dropped the match 3-0 to Vasey. Wayne Dion was the losing pitcher for Esso. The Penetanguishene Garrisons' blanked Wyevale 2-0 in the opening tournament game. Alvin Robillard was the winning pitcher. The whole Penetanguishene Gillesby leads Jamie Gillesby If Jamie Gillesby had been playing forward all season there's no telling where his soccer team might be now. The Penetanguishene Mos- quitos may have reversed their record of five losses and two wins if Gillesby had been free. to demonstrate his goal scoring abilities instead of shoring up Penetanguishene's _de- fense. Last Thursday the Penetanguishene Mos- quitos entered a game against Collingwood A with a record of four losses in a row. Gillesby, who coach Gord Fleming says is one of the team's best defensive players, was moved up to forward in an attempt to generate more offence. And that's exactly what Gillesby proceeded to do, as he pumped in five goals to lead the Mosquitos to an 8-1 triumph over Collingwood. On Thursday the Penetanguishene Mos- quitos take on their counterparts in Midland. - Port McNicoll downs by Danny Asselin In a_softball-hardball exhibition contest at the Midland ball park last Sunday, the Port MeNicoll fastball team whipped the Midland Indians 5-1 in one of the most interesting games ever played in town. To combine both brands of ball, the bases were moved in to softball distance and no lead-offs were allowed. While in the: field, Port used a softball and Indians played with a hardball when they held the field position. In the first inning, WHA hockey player Don Tannahill, formerly of Penetanguishene and now living in Port, cracked a two-run homer over the right field fence to send the Port team on its way. The Port players scored three more runs to one unearned run for Midland. But the result was secondary as the good time had by the large crowd and the players made for a fun evening to be remembered for a long time to come. Port did play to win, and had a decided edge in the match, since most of its players had hardball experience, while most Indians 5-1 Indians had played soft- ball, if at all, only as youngsters. And some of the players' remarks seem to indicate a rematch could be in the offing. Port's Wayne Miller said at the game "I'm really enjoying this, but that little ball sure does move fast." Indians' Danny Woods came back with "That beachball they throw is dead on your bat." But the best remark of all came from Indians' confused Brent Gordon, who just mumbled on his way to the plate "This is unreal."'
