i a es History of film (3) * Fairbanks and Pickford topped the list of stars in the golden age of silent movies by Terry Dupuis The star system had begun to develop as egtly as the first features of D.W. Grit aGrifith had established his own stock company of actors and ac- tresses which he employed in film af ae film. : These performers included Henry B. Walthall, Lillian Gish, Dorothy Gish and Donald Crisp. Through their repeated screen appearances in Griffith films, these players and many others became known to the public. By 1920, the star system was flourishing. Members of the public went to see a movie largely on the basis of who the stars of the film were. A number of actors and actresses had built up large followings, and the ap- pearance of each new film with one of these players was accompanied by the jingle of money at the box office. Therefore it was not surprising that the studio contract system developed hand in hand with the growth of the star system. Performers would sign a contract with a studio for a certain number of 'years and/or a certain number of pictures. The performer was usually well-paid under his contract, but it meant that he could not appear in the productions of any other studio. However, as the years went on, the practice became quite common for a major studio to loan out one of its contract players to another major Studio, at a very advantageous profit to the actor's home studio, though usually not the actor. Another practice which developed was an exchange whereby two studios would make a straight trade - Studio A would lend out its contract player X to Studio B in exchange for Studio B's Contract player Y. These were prac- tices which led to a number of studio abuses in the 1930's. Fairbanks - Pickford One of the most popular of all silent screen stars was Douglas Fairbanks (1883-1939) who thrilled the audiences of his day with his incredible swash- buckling and athletic feats and heroics. Such Fairbanks films as The Mark of Zorro (1921); The Three Musketeers (1922); Robin Hood (1922); The Thief of Baghdad (1924) and The Black Pirate (1926) have become classics of the silent screen, and are still enjoyable even today, half a century after they were made. ' If Douglas Fairbanks' screen image was that of the lusty adventurer, Mary Pickford's (1893- ) was that of the sweet innocent young heroine. Born in Toronto as Gladys Smith, Pickford earned herself the title of "America's Sweetheart'? via her ap- pealing and gentle performances in ee crossword B Te ]is is ji 18 {19 20 a 2 23 ee | 5 26 2 28 29 ET] 7 u %6 37 Ey Et) 40 al a [43 a" | 45 [46 my] 48 [49 0 51 2 (53 A 55 (56 37 8 9 60 6 62 3) 64 65 66 a 68 69 70 7 2 (73 74 75/76 7 78 19 80 a1 '(82 Eg w Ey 86 a7 BB 39 Ey a1 2 3 % 95 % |? 8 | 99 100 101 10 103, [04 1 fos 106 eel 107 108 109 T0111 m2 113 114 M15 116 WwW 118 i} 120 1a. iz 123 porn | een] 124) 125 126 T 128 123 | } 130 |, 131 T32 133/134 135 136 137 138 139 140, [141 142 143 144 145 46 [147 TY ea a od IE 150 151 152 ~ 153 154 155 156 157 158, [159 160 Ter {162 163 164 165 166 167168 169 170, [171 M2 173 74] 5 ieon ey 18 179 180 8 182 176 rE 7 181 183 184 185 186 187 188 189 190 j 131 192 li | 133 ACROSS 87 Thin line 158 Elevator 18 Musical 102 Say 1 Cudgel 89 Baltic direction sounds 104 Biblical 4 Main artery island 160 Japanese 19 Muchadorned kings 9 White bear 91 Utah flower drama 24 Aromatic 105 Irish 14 Musical 92 Biblical 161 Chaldean resin dagger passage king city 26 Soothsayer 108 Fathered 20 Miscalculate 94 Greek "four" 163 Layers 28 Account 111 Jewish 21 Apparition 96 Of oil 165 Look sullen entry month 22 Open mouthed 98 English 167 Citrus 30 Western 113 Matriculate 23 Steady river fruit state 115 Stair post 25 Sublet 99 Buddhist 170 Of aswelling 33 Small candle 117 Forward 27 Spring monk 173 Office 35 Independent 119 Overwhelms: flower 101 Access period one: slang slang 29 Industrial 103 January 176 Esoteric 37 Fashion 121 Paired leader holiday 178 Abraham's girl 122 Legislate 31 British 106 Man's name wife 40 Liquid 124 Recorded nursemaid 107 Reverse curve180 Physician measure 126 Early 32 Wail 109 Boardgame 182 Danger 43 Amorous German 34 Birth 110 Track 183 New looks 128 Build 36 Fact components enlistee 46 Spanish 131 Swiss 38 Posterior 112 Serpent 185 Want title warble 39 Treadle 114 Useless greatly 48 Engine 134 Vine fruit 41 Helm 116 Boardgame 187 Sun-dried 49 Nigerian tree 136 Characteristic position 118 Sheep brick 51 Sand hills 139 As faras 42 Hawaiian sounds 189 Maiden: 53 Metric 141 Verb form bird 120 Vindicate slang measure 142 Thus 44 French 123 Heron 190 Legislative 54 Disgust 144 Horizontal article 125 Bridle body expression timber 45 Bone: Latin straps 191 Chinese tea 56 Cutting tool 146 Sumatran 47 Steamer: 127 Gleamed 192 Man'sname 57 Facial deast _ abbr 129 Consumed 193 Guido's note cavity 147 Male bees 48 Justice 130 Allowable 60 New 149 Roman king goddess variation DOWN 62 Entry 151 Undraped 50 Speedy 132 Right-hand 64 Famous park Statue 52 Shabby page 1 Fire alarm 66 Coincide 153 Sea eagle 55 Pluto 133 Verb form 2 Region 68 Ambling 156 Weight domain 135 Breathe 3 Vagabond horse measure 58 Exclamation noisily 4 Programs 70 Merchandise 159 Veranda 59 Disconnected 137 Thread 5 Exclamation 73 Pale 162 Electronic 61 Chaser: comb. form 6 Decay 75 Noble bird detector 2wds. 138 Freight 7 Chinese 76 Wood- 164 Billow 63 Pass on station jy measure worker's 166 Gull-like bird 65 Ohiocity | 140 Vetoes: "8 Telamon knife 168 Italian 67 Waterproof slang 9 Family 78 Challenges family canvas 143 Pitchers member 80 Saltpeter 169 Not one 69 Renovate 145 Recreation: 10 Biblical 82 Assamese 171 Foretoken 71 Regarding abbr. king tribe 172 Italian 72 Printing 146 Football 11 Escape: 83 Large resort measure tally: abbr slang knives 174 Persian coin 74 Laketrouts 148 Encouraged: 12 Footless 86 Slowtrain 175 Girl's name 77 Mountain 2 wds animal 88 Franc: abbr. 177 Bantu native nymph 150 Lawmaker 13 Princely 90 Girlsname 179 Possesses 79 French 152 Climb 14 Girl'sname 93 Sorrow 181 Gear tooth writer 154 Army 15 Printing 95 Indigo 184 Neuter 81 Bargain officer: abbr measure plants pronoun events 155 Nigerian 16 Martini 97 Covet 186 Verbal 84 Bucolic people ingredient 99 Slant order (abbr.) 85 Scamp 157 "-- profundis" 17 Distant 100 Western 188 Take place Indian Answer on page 5 AQOKY =) NEWFOUNDLAND » A a, ("BDAY WASHINGTON/ SDAY Departs Aug.2830 | WILLIAMSBURG MOOSONEE J : | 1 Bi this interesting tour is bightght-| Deparis Aug. 9, Oct. 18 0S0 with @ visit fo the French Is-f i ' Departs ee $185° July 22, Aug. 18, 25 . She married Fairbanks and for many years they were touted as the ideal American couple; in their many trips to foreign countries they were often treated like visiting royalty. In 1919 they became co-founders, along with Charlie Chaplin and D.W. Griffith, of the United Artists Film Corporation. Valentino the lover Fairbanks was the great silent screen adventurer; Pickford was the great silent screen sweetheart. And Rudolph Valentino (1895-1926) was undoubtedly the great lover of the silents. A young Italian who emigrated to America while still in his teens, he made his first film appearance in 1914. But it was not until seven years and twenty films later that he became a super-star and created a sensation with movie audiences. It was his role in The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse in 1921 which led to his becoming the great romantic idol of the 1920's, a position which was rein- forced through his roles in The Sheik (1921); Blood and Sand (1922); The ~ Eagle (1925) and Son of the Skeik (1925). Valentinos sudden death in 1926 caused several suicides and his funeral was a national event. Lon Chaney (1883-1930) was the fourth outstanding screen personality of the silent era, he specialized in macabre roles which usually required elaborate make-up which he applied himself. He became known as "'the man of a thousand faces," due to the face that he never looked the same in any two films. His macabre performances and startling make-ups thrilled silent screen audiences in such movies as The Miracle Man (1919); The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923); The Phantom of the Opera (1925) and London After Midnight (1927). The above four early film stars were each phenomenally successful in their own day; they have all since become legends and moreover, they all belong | Wholesale meat products -- that's the criterion that must be met before a carcass receives the stamp 'Ontario Approved". The Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food licenses 265 meat packing plants in the province. The Ontario-approved plants provide custom-kill services, cutting, wrapping and fast-freezing for the home freezer, and retail outlets. Most of the plants are "small compared to the large well- known packers, but they processed more than 450,000 red meat carcasses and over 200,000 rabbits in 1974. Coming of Sound Valentino died shortly before the arrival of sound movies; Chaney died soon after the revolution of sound, having lived long enough to make only one talkie, The Unholy Three (1930); Fairbanks and Pickford made a few early talkies, but they were not very successful and the couple had retired from the screen by the middle 1930's. Movies up to the late 20's may have had no sound, but there was certainly variety for audiences to choose from. There were the Griffith and DeMille epics; the Douglas Fairbanks ad- ventures; Valentino romances; the Pickford tales; and the Lon Chaney melodramas. In addition to all these, there was one genre of film-making which many historians consider to have reached its finest and most perfected level during the silent era - screen comedy. Comedy existed from the beginning years of the cinema, and the early years of Mack Sennett's famous Keystone Studio certainly form an important chapter in silent screen comedy. Butit was in the late teens and mos{ of the twenties that screen comedy was perfected to such an extent that the period has become known as "The Golden Age of Comedy." The Little Tramp It was during this period that Charlie Chaplin (1889- ) perfected his little tramp characterization in such classics as The Kid, The Gold Rush and The Circus. (1895-1966) turned out his great comic masterpieces such as Sherlock Junior, The Navigator and The General. In addition' to these two greatest of the silent comedians, there was also Harold Lloyd, Harry Langdon, Fatty Arbuckle, Larry Semon, Ben Turpin, Charlie Chase, Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy. Like the other screen per- sonalities we have already discussed, very few of these silent comedians were to survive the coming of sound. The meat is inspected by meat inspectors under veterinary supervision for wholesomeness, sanitary handling and proper cooling and storage.
