Humphries There have been quite a few reports of 1!, inch pinkish larvae attacking seedling field corn, These larvae are usually found inside the stalk or in the soil near the base of the plant Damage is_ usually noticed on field perimeters first. The larvae feed on the first two inches of the stalk then move on to another plant. The adult of this pest is a brown moth that lays its eggs in September usually on quackgrass. In the spring the eggs hatch and the larvae move into the nearby corn and potato fields Since the borer migrates from weeds to corn it is possible to control it by maintaining weed-free fields, borders and fence rows. The use of insecticides is considered impractical because in most cases the damage is done before the larvae are spotted Haylage Harvest Underway Many farmers are busy ensiling their first cutting of hay. Some are trying haylage for the first time. Haylage usually refers to wilted legumes and grasses with a moisture range between 50-60 per cent. Hay that is ensiled below or above this range will not ferment properly and there will be spoilage.
