NEW HOLLAND Power squadron reminds boaters to wear lifejackets Inthe interests of safety, local Power Squadrons remind people who use the waters for recreation that lifejackets are an ab- solute must when boating. Statistics show that 85 percent of those who have drowned while using boats were not wearing lifejackets. Lifejackets do not guarantee survival in every boating accident, but are of no help if they are not being worn or are not readily available when needed. The law requires a Ministry of Transport (MOT) ap- proved lifejacket or lifesaving cushion for each person aboard. So why not tie one on? It could save your life. If you have never worn a lifejacket, try a practice run. Familiarize yourself with the tape arrangements. The jacket is reversible, but it is important when using the keyhole style that the waist straps are tied around the body and not around the lifejacket. Now, try out its capabilities. Wade into the water about chest deep and, by bending your knees, let the buoyancy of the jacket support you. The jacket will incline you in a back- ward position with your mouth clear of the water. Now, try swimming, using a cak or side stroke. Children must feel comfortable in the lifejackets and know how to stay afloat, so teach them how to wear their lifejackets and go through the water test with them. Penetanguishene Secondary School. PSS, Stayner and MSS competed in the meet. Stayner finished first in the meet followed by MSS (second) and PSS (third). Discus: 1. Eva Charlebois (P) 25.26 M 2. Mary Sue Beatty (P) 21:39 M 3. Violent movements nullify the stability of the jacket. A child has a different distribution of body weight and this may result in the jacket not always keeping the youngster's face up. It is therefore important to child, test with the Motorcycle association holds meeting The Georgian Bay Motorcycle Association will be holding a special meeting on Tuesday, May 27, at 8 p.m. at the Midland municipal building on Dominion Avenue. 'The association, which concentrates __ primarily on safety and training of bikers, held its annual meeting recently to determine the future and fate of the organization. With the prompting of member Peter Wedel, the club is determined to stay in existence. The association has been blessed by Midland chief of police and by Midland public safety committee chairman Miles Blackhurst, con- sidering the club's emphasis on safety. All interested persons are invited to attend the keeping in mind that lifejackets are not a substitute for adult supervision. Children and _non- swimmers should always wear lifejackets when ina boat. Other people, even experienced swimmers, should wear them when conditions warrant. Take care of lifejackets. A badly abused one has no safety value.
