NNN OST VV NS OSS x Mary Carney places second Midland's Mary Carney assuredly knows how to make a public speech. Her prepared talk on that very subject won her first prize in her own school, and in regional contests in Midland and Penetanguishene. Two weeks ago, she again delivered her speech in the Archdiocesan District of Toronto, where she com- peted with seven youngsters from North York, Peel, Scarborough and Toronto in | the Catholic Women's League public speaking contest finals. Mary came second, and won $25, which she says firmly that she has put in the bank. She and the first prize winner (a Scarborough youth who spoke on "A Normal Day in the Year 2001") have been invited to speak at the CWL annual convention at Toronto's Royal York Hotel on May 28. At present, the 16-by-40- foot barge is based at Gloucester Pool. Mrs. Beverley Roper is living in Toronto at the moment. Unfortunately, baby Peter Roper is in the Hospital for Sick Children with a virus. We trust that everything will work out and it won't be long until they are both home again. Have you noticed that the Blue Roof in Port Severn had a face-lift last week, with the installation of a new en- trance? It makes a big difference to the lighting. The Great Canadian Wagon Train arrived at the junction of Highways 12 and 103 last Monday, April 21, and was a sight to behold! It was something I've never seen before, and don't think I'll ever see again. I know young and old alike just had to go to see the 35-38 people who are travelling to the Peace River country in Alberta. I understand from talking to Chuck Robson, one of the "pioneers", that there are 10 wagons with normally four people to each wagon. I can only say that if I were 20 years younger, I might have joined them. They sure have some guts -- no matter what people think! The train left the junction the following morning at approximately 10:30 a.m., and travelled to Lone Pine Road north of Port Severn, where they stopped for PKGS Action Priced! Anyone wishing to donate to the cause please do. All donations will be gratefully received, A lengthy discussion on the garage sale took place. It was decided to serve coffee and sandwiches at the sale. A tentative date of June 14 was set, but more definite discussion on the date will take place at the May meeting.
