It's not a western, but a contemporary crime film, and in some respects it is reminiscent of "Bonnie And Clyde" and "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance' Kid". For "Thunderbolt and Lightfoot" is a rollicking crime story that combines lots of laughs, action, suspense and sen- timent. Thunderbolt and Lightfoot are two bank robbers played by Clint Eastwood and Jeff Bridges, respectively. Eastwood is the brain of a four-man outfit with a meticulously detailed plan to steal half a million dollars from a transport company. Bridges is the clown of the group, a smart aleck but inexperienced kid who is in on his first caper. George Kennedy is a seasoned safe- cracker named Red Leary, and Geoffrey Lewis, an innocuous little guy, is the gang's driver. Perfect crime capers are certainly nothing new in movies, but this one has a couple of new angles to it. One interesting change is the location of the story. Instead of the customary big city background of Chicago or New York, 'Thunderbolt and Lightfoot" takes place in Montana, the land of the Big Sky. The movie was filmed in and around Great Falls, Montana by East- wood's own production company, Malpaso Productions, and the out- doors location photography is superb. As for the acting, East- wood is Eastwood, as usual, but I'm sure that the many fans of this most laconic of screen stars won't complain, and the film does have the novelty of being on the other side of the law in a modern- day crime story. (Eastwood played a modern-day sheriff in "Coogan's Bluff' and a super-cop in "Dirty Harry" and "Magnum Force"). George Kennedy, most by Shirley Whittington If yours is a family of dedicated eaters, left-overs may not be a problem. Smart shoppers, however, often shop with left-overs in mind. If a particular cut of meat is selling for less than a dollar a pound, it's a good idea to buy a big roast that will hopefully provide two or three meals. So, into your shopping cart that week, you will also throw some noodles, The Happy Cooker . Leftovers can be used very tastily perhaps a can of mushroom soup, or some onion soup mix, for these are the happy little helpers that will assist in recycling the remains from Sunday dinner into several delicious main dishes throughout the week. Beef and ham, slice more thinly (and therefore go farther) when they're cold and that's the easiest way to cope with yesterday's roast. If you feel creative, you: can dice the cold meat, and combine with a white sauce (seasoned with onion, THURSDAY APRIL 24 | 2 FoR 1 SAL mustard or horseradish if you have a leather tongue..) The resulting concoction then becomes something a la king, and goes well on toast, baking powder biscuits or hot noodles. If you have a machine that will grind the left over meat, you can produce a zesty sandwich spread if you toss in some chopped pickles, onions and celery, glued together with salad dressing. Or you can fashion croquettes by adding bread crumbs and egg. These can be fried or baked. However, I think the acting honours in 'Thun- derbolt and Lightfoot" would have to go to Jeff Bridges, the 23-year-old son of actor Lloyd Bridges. His per- formance as the young robber, Lightfoot, is a skillful blending of comedy and pathos. This role earned Bridges a Best Supporting Actor nomination, and it is one of 'Thunderbolt and Lightfoot's" highlights. * Clint Eastwood fans, by the way, might be interested in knowing that there is a worthwhile book now available on the actor. It is a paperback by Stuart M. Kaminsky in the Signet Film Series, and it sells for $1.50. The book covers' Eastwood's career from his early days as a Hollywood extra, through his many years on the successful T.V. series Rawhide and the popular so- called "'spaghetti" westerns ODEON THEATRE KING ST.
