A telephone information and referal service serving the Huronia Area by Eileen Smith "The Odyssey of Free Food'"' Many of you already know the origin of the 11 tons of frozen food which was distributed to Midland and area residents last week. McCain's factory turned this food over to the govern- ment following a fire at their large factory in New Brun- swick. ' Lists of names had been completed earlier through churches, schools and welfare workers from which an order was sent to Toronto. We received much less food than the original order, but made it a priority to distribute only to the names already listed as they had been given to Contact. The fact that it was arriving was not announced publicly, (and we thank the media for the consideration). Those who had requested food were notified by note or by telephone, unless they could not be reached. It is extremely difficult to please everyone, but we made a real effort to distribute the food fairly and to as many as possible. More than 400 families were served by Midland proper. Part of our 11 tons went to Wyebridge and Elmvale to serve the area south of Midland. The whole organizational job was momentous, particularly since we weren't really sure how much or what we were getting. To compile the order took a great deal of time, and much forethought was necessary to avoid confusion. We were particularly grateful to the Civic Centre trustee board for granting approval to distribute food from the centre. Capt. Figley of the Salvation Army, although busy with his Red Shield campaign, did all he could and was on hand all day for distribution. As usual, our volunteers came through to help bring order out of what could have been chaos, with free food being given away. Chuck Lackapelle, Tom McAullough, Mary Brown, Bob Duncan (Dominion Store Mgr.); Reg Mulligan, Charlie Housome, Stan Dane, Bert Desroches, Les Paul, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Adamson, Sandra Adamson, Joan Spires, Rhoda Brownlee, Ann Strapko, Angie Crock, Ruth Rumney, Valerie Hammond, Betty Hawke, Scott Smith and even a Toronto Globe and Mail staff writer who innocently dropped in to Contact didn't mind being recruited as a volunteer for a while. Students from ARC Industries workshop were especially helpful and willing. The Air Cadets also assisted in setting up the night before. Police Chief Ernie Bates had his men on the job directing the flow of traffic. They were great! My own Contact staff were invaluable. No one will ever know how much total time and effort went into this planning. To those of you who appreciated the food, I would suggest that you send a letter to your provincial member, Gordon Smith MPP Simcoe-East, Main block, Queen Park, Toronto, or write your local paper The provincial government accepted a _ tremendous responsibility in accepting and distributing this food, I know they would be glad to know from some of you, that it was appreciated.
