Fin, Fur, and Feather by Bryan Berriault April 26th marks the opening of a new trout season. To the ardent trout angler the opening of trout season is second in importance only to New Years Eve. Trout season, being one of the first seasons to open in our area, brings the fishermen flocking to the rivers and streams in their quest for trout. If the price were calculated per pound of trout I am sure it would be cheaper to buy salmon in the store but the ex- citement that makes grown men act like kids and leave the wife and children just would not be there. Sitting on some river bank at five in the morning soaking wet may not sound like enjoyment to some people but it sure is to a trout fisherman. I think trout season for '75 will be better than most years because of the cool weather we have been getting in the early part of April. The rainbows are starting to spawn in the Sturgeon and Coldwater rivers and have been doing so for weeks in the Collingwood area Smelt fishing is upon us and the Ministry of Natural Resources wants smelt fishermen to take smelts from Lake Simcoe before they become a problem to the more desireable species now in the lake. Parry Sound should bear smelts very shortly and its not as a rule hard to get all you need up there Each year through the kids and snags the tackle bow gets lower and lower. At this time of year we start to look for something new that will catch fish like nothing we have ever had before. I have run across a few lures that I think are worth mentioning Heddon has perfected a new lure called Tiny Tad-polly The action is good and it is designed for the rainbow fishermen but I think it just may be good on the walleye as well. As soon as the blanket of ice leaves the water I may get a chance to try it Nebco Vibro-Tail has to be a real fish catcher. Its rubber body and weighted head gives the lure the advantage of being able to bounce along the bottom like a feeding minnow. The tail on this lure is so good that it has been patented and after seeing a demonstration at the Sportsmen Show, I can see why. This lure will be a killer on bass and walley with any fish that get within seeing distance a possible victim of the Vibro-Tail Normark head rumours that some fishermen were cat ching fish too big for their Rapala knife to handle in the filletting department so they brought forth a nine inch Rapala knife to complement the four and six inch knives we already have. This nine incher should handle all the fish we can catch no matter how big For those fishermen that spend their time fishing for deep water fish such as the lake trout or salmon, the Big Jon downrigger will be just the thing. This downrigger will enable the fishermen to use spinning or even fly rods. The Big Jon will get your line down to where the lunker lurk and you will catch them on light tackle instead of the conventional steel lines Victoria Harbour has a new sport shop. The new shop is called J.C. Sporting Goods. The owner John Sajan, a fisherman himself, knows the needs of the Sportsmen of this area and carries the necessities we need along with live bait The sport shop is located on Martha Street which is the same street as the Victoria Harbour Legion's east entrance is on and most fishermen know where that is I hope some of the past lures and items will help in the field For some reason it takes a long time for new lures to reach us fishermen up here and now maybe we will get the jump with these lures.
