That afternoon his wife deposited a $1-million cheque in their mutual ac- count and waited in their Rosedale home for him to join her in a celebration dinner. Small never arrived. He vanished some time that snowy evening, and mystery of his disappearance has remained unsolved for 50 years. The police file was closed in the sixties but recently McClelland and eaetaciae The Midland connection with Ambrose Small, Toronto's disappearing millionaire playboy Stewart, Toronto publishers, have posted a $1,000,000 reward for the recovery of Small's body. There's no mystery there - McClelland and Stewart are publishers of The Strange Case of Ambrose Small, Fred McClement's fascinating documentary of the whole baffling case. Based on _ police and newspaper reports, trial records and personal in- terviews, the tale has all the elements of a first class mystery story - greed, lust, mysterious deaths, theft, and an escaped mental patient who claimed to be Small. Ambrose Small owned a chain of theatres in Ontario. His wife, Theresa, was an accomplished woman, a highly respected Toronto socialite and a _ generous contributor to Roman Catholic charities. His secretary and booking manager, John Doughty, married Berthe Marchildon from Penetanguishene in 1909. She died two years later of diptheria. Doughty himself disap- peared shortly after Small vanished. Many years later he was found and convicted of the theft of bonds from Small's safety deposit box. Oddly enough, the bonds were found intact at Doughty's arrest. None of them was ever converted to cash. Now here's the Midland connection. Small's sisters, Gertrude and Florence, were never happy with the Asolid performance at MSS by Shirley Whittington Anastasia, a play adapted from Marcelle Maurette by Guy Bolton, was an am- bitious choice for MSS Theatre Arts students, and presentations of the play last week proved that they could handle such serious drama very capably. For teenaged players, there were many potential obstacles. The play was set in a time and style of living that were totally unfamiliar to youngsters of the seventies. The characters ranged in age from decidedly mature to ancient. The dialogue was almost cumbersome at times, but the MSS players handled everything with com- mendable polish. There was a tendency to hurry through some of the more lengthy speeches, but in the main, dialogue was crisp and audible. As Anastasia, Ann Brownell was compelling. She is a fine young actress who grew with the character from bewildered terror into crafty Bounine well. Steve 5°:p.m. Godrey was every inch a WED. & THUR. Those' players' with smaller parts distinguished themselves. Carolyn Woloski as the anguished Annouchka tugged at the heart strings. David Cameron who played her aged companion was a really good old man - wispy and frail. Silvanna Zapponi was regal and imperially intimidating as the Dowager Empress, and Saskia Van Toledo played her lady-in- waiting with saucy con- fidence. Andy Leitch made a - dashing young doctor and Rick Beutler was a hand- some prince Paul. Valerie Scovill, Allen Andrews and John Park all turned in good performances. The set design was suitably muted and grew in elegant intent as the plot progressed. The costume department deserves a special word of praise. There was nothing make-shift about the war- drobes they prepared, and the women's gowns _par- ticularly, were beautiful and faithful to the period. monthly allowance that he provided for them. After his disappearance, they tried unsuccessfully to establish that his wife Theresa had murdered her husband. Theresa died in 1935 and in 1939, Gertrude Small moved to Midland hoping that prayers at the Martyrs' Shrine would cure her of a nervous affliction. She stayed at the Georgian Hotel (now the site of the downtown Dominion Store) and began keeping company with a Warren Bell, a local electrician who had been born in New Lowell. Against the wishes of her sister, Gertrude married Bell in Stayner. On the return trip to Midland, their PEN THEATRE Thurs., Fri., Sat. The Strange Case of Ambrose Small is a fascinating story and McClement has done an excellent job of recreating the flavour of Orange Tory Toronto in the early twen- ties. The author offers no solution to the mystery, but he obviously has a theory. So have I. So will you, if you read the book.
