The village on the Balm Beach road is dwarfed by her neighbours to the north and east, Penetanguishene and Midland, does not have the industry of the two larger towns, or the benefits of a home arena, but that doesn't stop the locals from playing hockey and playing it well. The Perkies, the pride of Perkinsfield, play out of the Elmvale Senior and District hockey league, an industrial hockey system, composed of teams from Elmvale, Midhurst, Wyevale, and Midland. And despite the fact that the other communities with the exception of Wyevale are all larger than Perkinsfield, the Perkies are a com- petitive team. They're the defending league champs and although the team is floating somewhere around third or fourth in a six team nobody's taking them lightly. Last Thursday they knocked off league leading Mansfield 4-3 on a last minute goal by Richard 'Beans' Lafaive. Mansfield is noted as the tough physical team and didn't sway from that brand of hockey last week. The Perkies let Mansfield play it tough and while Mansfeild was roughing it up to the tune of 27 minutes in penalties the Perkies simply skated, checked, and in the In recreational hockey end outscored their in- timidating opponents. The Perkies were assessed only seven minutes in penalties. The Perkies enjoy playing hockey and their fans enjoy watching them. They're the only team in the league which consistently draws fans year in and year out. Mansfield has been drawing good crowds this year since it has become a winning team, but the Perkies still get the most fan support in the league. According to manager Niel Lesperance the reason for the good turnout is that almost all the players come from Perkinsfield. One player brings his father, Uncle Bobby's beats RCA RCA lost another game to Uncle Bobby's last Monday in recreational hockey action at the Midland Arena Gardens "-- only the team's second loss of the year. Paul Brissette and Wayne Miller, each with two goals, provided all the fire-power needed in Uncle Bobby's 4-3 victory. Ken Laballe with a pair, and Butch Smitham replied for RCA's squad. In the face-off between Bausch and Lomb and Mr. Car Wash, Glen Leonard led the way with three goals to pace Bausch and Lomb to a solid 7-4 win. Gary But- tineau, Brian Phillips, Dave Bennett and Harvey Benoit added to the winners' total. Paul lLaughran, Jim MacDonald, Cecil Merkley Welch to open Ski championship at Mountain View Robert Welch, the Ontario Minister for Culture and Recreation, will officially open the Canadian Cross Country Skiing Cham- pionships February 27, at the Mountain View ski hills west of Midland The minister, who has recently moved from the Community and_ Social Services portfolio, will also speak to the students at Midland Secondary School. The championships, running through to March 2, will draw competitors from as far away as Inuvik in the Northwest Territories, and will be a major highlight of North Simcoe's winter. Opening ceremonies get under way at 12:30 on the 27th, with the first race set for 1:30 p.m. Racers will travel routes ranging from five to fifteen kilometres in length, depending on their age and sex. More individual races take place March 1, with relay racing, featuring teams from more than 15 ski divisions across Canada, on Sunday's agenda. The organizaing com- mittee is being chaired by Elmer Vuorimaki. SAVE $900 - 500 \ An added Bonus: These cars run on ANY gas...leaded or unleaded. JAN. In the other league game of the night, Sniders' and Duggan's battled to a 44 stalemate. George Weatherall paced Snider's with a pair, as Jim Vaillancourt and Norm Lemieux added singles. Gary Lizotte, Joe Gagnon, Gary Preston and Mike Laurin were the Duggan marksmen. An exhibition contest saw the second tie of the week, as Ogilvie's and Bausch and Lomb hammered goalten- ders on their way to a 7-7 final score. George Weatherall and Keith Bath both had _ hat- tricks for Ogilvie's with Don Charlebois adding one. Jim Holden had three goals for Bausch and Lomb, as Glen Leonard picked up two, and Brian Phillips and Garnet Rourke scored singles. another brings the wife and kids, the younger ones bring their girlfriends. That's how things are in a small com- munity. Everyone knows each other and takes pride in each others accom- plishments. After winning their second team championship in ten years last season, players and fans alike purchased blue team jackets with the Perkies crest on the left front side. Perkinsfield is shor- tened to the Perkies because the full village name is to big to fit on team sweaters or jackets. : Perkinsfield, the small village with a big name and a big hockey team. You can call its senior hockey team by the shart form name but don't short change them on ice. More often than not when the Perkies lace their skates they perk up.
