Yves Fontaine, 34, formerly of Marathon, has been convict- ed of unlawfully hunting with a snowmachine; obstructing investigating conservation offi- cers by trying to claim the wolf as roadkill; and of unlawful possession' of a timber wolf. -His fines total more than $2,500. He has also been pro- hibited from hunting for three years, and he forfeited his 1991 Cheyenne snowmobile, valued between $5,000-6,000. The trial took place over two and a half days in Provincial Offences Court in Marathon, concluding Nov. 18. "It wasn't a routine investi- gation," says Paul Dennis, Con- servation Officer (CO) in the Terrace Bay Area. Dennis was the investigating officer in the case, with assistance from CO Mike Kenny, who also works in the Terrace Bay Area. "Tt was a fascinating investi- 66lt was a fascinating investigation ... The investigation started last January when the Terrace Bay MNR office received an anony- mous tip about someone who had killed a timber wolf with his snowmachine. "It gave us a first name, 'it gave us an occupation, and that was about it," says Dennis. Neighbouring MNR Dis- tricts were notified to be on the lookout for someone trying to legitimize the wolf as roadkill. "In order to do anything with the wolf, you would have to get what's called a Certifi- cate of Reporting before you could take it to a taxidermist," says Dennis. In order to get the certificate, a CO would have to be con- vinced that the wolf had been killed accidentally. "(Fontaine) brought the wolf into the Wawa office, and an officer there examined the wolf externally," he says. "And the officer was also given an opportunity to examine the snowmobile, which happened to be in the accused's vehicle in the parking lot."
